Update on the assortment of seedlings: I can definitely see sunflowers, morning glories, cosmos, marigolds, four o’clocks, tithonia(?), but that’s all I got. Now, will the marigolds be small or two feet tall? Who knows ✨ The brilliant thing is, my one garden pretty much completely failed during the winter. None of the perennials made it through. I was bemoaning this now weed patch when I realized I have an entire garden waiting right here. So thank you, farmer’s market seed mix packet distributor. I may not agree with the method, but I can’t argue with the results.
About my garden, planting at home I’m continuing to work on the garden. Or rather, I’m planting everything indoors for now. Indoors. So that at the end of May I can take everything to the garden. And plant it there. This year I’m making a big garden. The biggest one yet. And I’m still working on it. I’ve temporarily stopped planting new seeds. I ran out of space. That’s a problem. And I don’t transplant what’s already grown from small containers into larger ones. For the same reason. I made shelves. And put them by the window. But not everything worked out right away. It takes time. Boards. Furniture boards. Beams. Cut to size with a saw. Install them so they stand. I place furniture boards or boards on beams. 50 centimeters high. A simple design. Not always reliable. It wobbles. That’s the first option. I don’t know exactly how it should be. But the movement is correct. The problem is in the fasteners. To securely fasten the boards and beams. And to level them. Possibly. Sometimes one beam is higher, another a little lower. Or it doesn’t matter. I haven’t figured it out yet. I realized what happened with my second crop of plants. Not all of them survived. Unfortunately. My mistake. I figured it out. First thing’s first. The plants didn’t have enough light yet. In the back of the room. On the floor. That’s the main mistake. While it was still March or April, it was quite dark. And the daylight hours were dark. The room quickly became dark. I didn’t take that into account. My first experiment. But then I transplanted everything that survived to the light. I simply moved the plants closer to each other and even placed them between the rows. Just so everything would fit. At least somehow. The plants that survived until this point mostly survived. True. They’re not big. Of course. But they’re alive. And that’s the main thing. I keep an eye on them. I realized I needed lighting. These are lamps. LEDs, for example. Or photo lamps. They’re installed from above. I figured that out. It will take time. The lamps themselves will need a socket where the lamp fits. It comes with a cord. I’ve seen it. I’d try this design first. There are full-spectrum lamps. Specialized ones, like red and blue. And just light bulbs. You can go that route. It’s a good idea. If there are a lot of plants, you’ll need to set up a shelf. That will also take time. Scattering them on the floor won’t work. There’s just not enough light. Especially in March and early April. Now the daylight hours have noticeably increased. And it’s gotten better. Somewhere in the back of the room, things seem to be in order. Regarding the light. All of this will take time. That’s why I’ve put off the transfer and planting process for now. Overall, I’ve found that I’m doing fine repotting plants. In most cases, it doesn’t harm the plants. That’s good. And I water them properly. Regularly. Every other day. Sometimes even every day. But when it’s dark, and the watering continues, it becomes a real mess. However, under normal lighting conditions, watering every other day is perfectly fine. Some things can even be done every two days. It depends on the soil and the plants. I’m starting to figure things out. I fertilize every 10 days. I use Krepysh fertilizer. It’s a mineral fertilizer. You throw these little stones in water and dissolve them. Just wait a while. Shake them up. And then water. The usual watering. Water at the roots. And around them. As usual. Make sure the entire soil is moist. I’ve done this three times already. For the very first plants. And for the others as they appear. For some, just once. I only feed the plants that I’ve transplanted from a small seed container to a larger one, for those that have already started growing and are waiting to be planted in the garden. There are so many plants that should have been transplanted into larger containers instead of waiting. But then again, this space. And I wasn’t prepared for so many plants. And they need 8x8 cm containers. And soil. So I transplanted as many as I could. The marigolds are even blooming. Very beautiful flowers! The cornflower is already as tall as grass. And the asters are growing really well! That’s my main thing. Then I started adding variety. Plants I’m trying to grow for the first time. Something’s growing! just a little seedling updates some more basil and lavender has sprouted. the calendula has risen from the depths and sprouted. i can see the little radicles on the sage seeds so they’ll be sprouting soon. and i believe the chamomile and oregano have sprouted too but they’re so itty bitty it’s a bit hard to see. all that’s left is rosemary and parsley, which the packets say about 2-3 weeks so far i am succ-seeding (hehehehe)
HOLY SHIT MY BASIL GERMINATED I have 2 varieties. The lemon basil germinated first/is bigger than the sweet one. Does anyone know why they look kinda yellow? I’m wondering if it’s because with the layout of the seed tray it gets slightly less sun on the side closest to the window, which if feel like is the yellowest. I slid it a couple inches back to help. I’ve had a grow light on 24/7 if that makes any difference. Not sure if I’m supposed to actually leave it on constantly like that but I figured why not. Please let me know why not, if there is a reason. The thyme, chamomile, and forget me nots are doing well. I’m suspicious that a forget me not ended up in the chamomile pod by accident. (Bottom, top right) Only one mint sprout so far. It looks like one sprouted in the corner of a cube and died, probably because it was dry in that corner even though I’ve been keeping the centers moist. You can see I threw some water on it just now, just in case. I’ve also got bugs. I’m not sure which one they’re infesting or how bad it is yet, but there’s at least 5 of them and they fly around when I blow gently on all the plants in this spot. Here’s a picture of one. If you have any idea what they are and how to deal with them, please let me know. Right now I’m figuring they’re here because the soil is perpetually moist for the seedlings, and hoping they’ll just go away. I’m also wondering if they’re related to these brown spots on my cacti that I found when uppotting:(
Here’s what’s blooming. I planted up some of the planters. I have to return one to my sister so it didn’t get planted up. One I planted teddy bear sunflower seeds so it only looks empty. I grew that bachelor button from seed and it’s finally blooming :D We got some pink and black iris and a variegated variety but they’re only foliage rn so I’ll have to wait for next year to see them bloom. We had some good rain so even though I’ve been trying to stay on top of the weeds and keep the dirt ready for a grass and wildflower mix…they keep coming back. I started cleaning up my native garden beds. I still have to tackle some more clean up but I removed all the dead stems. I added an obedient plant, campanula, and a Blackfoot daisy from a native plant sale this past weekend. I have some coreopsis, rudbeckia, tithonia, and ratibida I started from seed waiting to go out and fill some spots. I didn’t get them planted out this time around bc my back started to hurt and we had other stuff to do, but hopefully this weekend I’ll get to it. This was about 4 hours of puttering around and I am feeling it today.
Potted up the older seedlings finally. It’s almost time to harden them off and get them in the ground. Probably started the zinnias way too early but idc. Started the last round of herbs and veggies. I ran out of plant tags so I need to remember the last two rows are marigolds and larkspur. None of my peppers germinated so that sucks but they were old seeds. I am always amazed at Coleus. One of the cats likes to commit plant crimes but they are bouncing back. If I didn’t mention it before, Mighty Mosaic is one of my favorite varieties of all time. I was sad she targeted them, but they are so resilient.
