Tonight’s salad journal entry is a side dish for some whitefish - which was bought because it was shockingly cheap, and turns out to also be shockingly delicious! For its price, I was fully expecting it to be awful, but I’ve cooked it twice now and been impressed both times. Today I baked it at 400 for 20 minutes, stuffed with lemon, thyme, and parsley. The salad consists of: -turnip greens -lettuce -parsley -blanched asparagus -sugar snap peas -feta cheese -Kalamata olives -dressed only with olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, and S&P The turnip greens were a bit of a garden accident. I bought turnip seeds on a whim a few weeks back, and it wasn’t until I got them home that I saw the variety I got is not bred for a nice turnip root but only for the leaves. I figured well, I already bought them, might as well give it a shot, so I tossed them in the garden. They’re growing strong, better than some of the other greens I planted on purpose! They have a strong, kind of peppery flavor that tastes different than arugula but reminds me of it and seem to work well in similar applications; but they’re also a bit heartier, which makes me think they would be nice cooked like spinach. I’ll have to try them that way soon.
I visited the Rogerson Clematis Garden a couple of weeks ago. The garden is tiny - just an acre or so surrounding a farm house - but it includes more than 900 species of clematis, making it the most comprehensive collection in a public garden in North America. Late May is not peak clematis season, but the garden was already gorgeous and well worth the short trip from Portland. The garden is open from dawn to dusk every day, and is free to visit. (Bonus: If you live in the area and have a garden, volunteers are onsite selling clematis plants several days each week.) West Linn, Oregon, May 2026.
Tonight I went to the new member night at the Missouri Botanical Garden . I’ve never had a membership before. I’ve only ever come when it is free for St Louis residents (that’s my taxes baybee!!). I enjoyed a walking tour with a garden docent, and the sun set while on the tour. There’s this great sculpture exhibition there through September called Patterns in Nature . Everything is lit up, but you don’t notice it until after dark. Here are some photographs I took this evening, including most under the cut.
