Charles Beck - Coastal Hills with Fog, Rock, Brush A recent painting and one of several I have painted of the brownish coastal hills and the fog and the brush and the rocks. I never get tired of wandering around the hills this time of year, especially when the fog drifts in and softens the hills and the distance.

Georges de La Tour, The Cheat with the Ace of Diamonds, c. 1635 Someone at this table is about to lose everything. While the young man stares innocently at his cards, the woman beside him secretly signals to the others, and a hidden ace is already being pulled from beneath her belt. Every glance in the painting is part of the scheme, and the victim is the only person who has no idea what is happening.

The Queen Who Put Her Sons On A Raft To Die There is a painting from 1880 that almost nobody talks about. Two princes. Lying motionless on a wooden raft. Drifting down an empty river with no oar, no rudder, and no one coming to help them. Their legs are wrapped in bandages. Their arms hang limp. One of them can barely keep his eyes open. At first glance it looks almost peaceful. Like two young men resting on a royal barge. It is not peaceful. The woman who put them there was their mother. A queen. A founder of abbeys and hospitals. A woman who had herself been sold into slavery as a child and spent her entire life fighting to free others. The Catholic Church later made her a saint. The same woman the legend says burned the tendons in her sons’ legs so they could never walk again. Then covered them with silk pillows and set them adrift on the River Seine. And here is the part that keeps me up at night. Historical records make no mention of any of it. No revolt. No punishment. No raft. The story was written down five hundred years after it supposedly happened. So either a saint did something unthinkable to her own children. Or someone invented one of the most haunting stories in medieval history and attached it to a real woman’s name. And a painter in 1880 looked at that legend and decided the world needed to see it. I made a video about this painting and the woman behind it and I genuinely do not know how to feel about her even now.
