Autumn–On the Hudson River (Jasper Francis Cropsey, 1860)

Aaron Douglas, panel from the mural Aspects of Negro Life, 1934. In 1934, the Works Progress Administration hired Douglas to paint a mural in the New York Public Library’s 135th street branch. The four-panel mural was entitled Aspects of Negro Life and depicted painted figures representing the Black experience. This panel, called Song of the Tower, shows a man playing the saxophone in what looks to be an apocalyptic setting (don’t those two two buildings in the upper right look eerily like the World Trade Center?). The player strikes a commanding pose, and his sax has light radiating out from it. The Statue of Liberty can be seen below the instrument. Photo: The Collector
