I Love The Color Pink: A Homage to My Boyhood When I was younger, the color pink carried a lot of controversy amongst myself and my peers. To like pink was a statement. If a girl likes and flaunts pink, of course she’s a diva—Pink is the EPITOME of girlhood. If you were a boy who dared to as much as wear pink once, you were doomed to the allegations (as if in middle school you had much say over your wardrobe anyway). Either way, it seemed like everyone had a complex relationship with Pink. Here, when babies are born, pink and blue balloons float gently against light blue skies… Heterosexual nuclear families flaunt this color coding system at their gender reveals (a very ironic event actually), baby showers, in their nurseries, (etc) as an identifier—Pink is girl, Boy is Blue. And it’s not just heterosexual nuclear families that do this, its become a part of American culture. I don’t think it’s inherently bad, but it is definitely not good . When the “Roaring 20’s” came about, a sense of commodification was introduced. People could now obtain things, but things had to be bought to stimulate the economy… In order to sell, you needed to market…And what was the American dream? The beautiful white nuclear family—you know the one with one boy and one girl exactly, and their boyhood and girlhood is so clearly defined through their clothing? Timmy wears his patchy overalls with his little news boy hat, and Susie wears her “good clothes” and her matching pink ribbons. Pink not only became a symbol for the girly-girls, but it represented something for the two-spirit, girl people in the space as well—if I wanted to honor my boyhood, I had to hate pink, too. And for a while, I acted like I hated pink. If given options, I naturally began to gravitate towards whichever choice was “less girly”. I wasn’t excited to wear the dresses and the girly clothes. I wanted to honor my boyhood, I wanted to despise pink. My favorite color was already purple, but I would always lean towards the blue hues, never the violets, and please, absolutely NO MAGENTA. It wasn’t until my late teens that I realized not only do I not hate pink…it’s actually a beautiful color. Yes, it’s 2026. It seems like even cis-heterosexual men have developed a sense of style outside of what has been considered “normal” for them all this time—painted nails, cropped shirts, some have even mastered make-up application and touch-up their skin under the understanding that maintenance is not gay (finally…). So this conversation about my girl “pink” may feel dated, but it isn’t. I remember sitting in the dining room of my first apartment some 5 years ago, having frequent conversations with myself about gender, revealing the truly two-spirited nature of my existence. In the past we didn’t accept hairy girls, deep-voiced girls, girls with flat chests, girls who like girls, girls who are all of the above; we gave them the Pink pill and if that didn’t stick, they were outcast to the “tomboy” grave where the expansiveness of their girlhood went to die. No one asked for Pink. No one really asked for another identity to manage, one that is so closely associated with this concept of dainty , “pretty” femininity. My feet smell like corn chips if I wear shoes with no socks longer than an hour, my arm pit hair is so long sometimes I accidentally pull it, I don’t shave down there (I think the hair belongs), my voice is deep, and even deeper when I chain-smoke… I’m not “pretty”. I’m a wild animal. I’m a semi-liberated, confused, queer in overalls and a push-up bra—slightly too small for my wild woman areolas that hug my breasts. I accept everything about me that makes me queer, which is why I love pink. How queer is it to be a boy/girl/human/pink princess/purple girl/pants sagging off the ass with a pink thong-human with absolutely no parameters. Not blue ones, not pink ones. With Love, Kali (To the constant state of becoming)
