For the grading fanfic tropes: Fake Dating
Thanks for playing! ^-^ Gonna give this one a very solid D. It has not made my “blacklisted tag” AO3 skin, but I do prefer to scroll past it. I would read it if it were the only new thing in my OTP’s ship tag out of despair, but it’s really, really not my thing. Fanfic Trope Grading Game

Jas And Art Jas and Art Rating : *not rated yet* Genre : BL/ Fake Dating / LGBTQ+ / Romance/ Family Drama/ Self-discovery/ Slow burn/ Slice of Life/ Double Life?/ Friends to Lovers? Mini-Summary : A young artist named Jas (mc1) gets tired of people’s comments on his nonexistent love-life. So, one day, he jokingly say that he’s dating “Art”. Problem is, in their school, just a year younger, there is someone named “Art”. So, the rumor starts spreading that they are both dating.
Snippet As I transferred my gaze to him, I saw him looking down at me. “I can see that each of the artists who did these,” and he gestured at the murals, “had a common teacher, and that teacher is very good at imparting the love of art as well as the skill of it.” Dropping his hand, he took mine. “Good afternoon, Miss Kal'istae. I was in the area and thought you might like lunch.” I stared at the bag he held up. “Rafayel, have you seen the gossip rags this morning?” I asked, just a bit desperately. There was no way anyone would believe we weren’t dating if they found him here. He gave me that slow smile of his, then started towards my desk. As my hand was still caught in his, he drew me after. “Of course I have. Thomas woke me up quite early to make certain I was aware and ask if the gallery had an official statement to release.” “… you realize we’re not beating the allegations here,” I said dryly even as I drew my hand from his and began clearing up the clutter on my desk. As soon as there was a clear space, he set the takeout bag down. His soft laugh was barely more than a huff of air. “I know,” he admitted as he began digging in the bag, extracting containers of dumplings. I felt my heart flutter as I saw the name of my favorite dumpling shop and realized he’d actually been listening to me that night when we’d been just randomly making small talk as we toured the gallery. “Honestly, I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle to try and deny it, especially since those rumors could help us out.” I froze as I reached for my storage cabinet, where I kept the paper plates that I used for class parties. “Help us out? How could it help us out if everyone thinks we’re dating?” When I glanced over my shoulder, he was watching me with a devil-may-care grin on his pretty face. “We’re going to be spending a lot of time together, you and I. Your idea of a collaboration is good - and I intend to make it a reality,” he added, “but it won’t be enough to explain why we’re spending so much time with one another. But if everyone thinks we’re dating, well…”
i really don’t get fake dating / pr dating for athletes, especially if the reason is because to clean up their playboy image. like girl who the fuck cares if the guy is a man as long he’s good - he don’t even need to be mcdavid or sasha barkov level, just look at andrei svechnikov and seth jarvis but what if you’re a 24 y/o alternate captain, and your captain just got traded mid season. you know the management and fans wanted to your 19 y/o 1C teenage phenomenon the next captain. and you secretly wanted to be captain yourself, and knows part of the reason the management skip you because they think you’re a man whore and pr nightmare but the 19 y/o still lived with an older teammate, can’t drink at bar and also a manwhore. you’ve been captain for your junior team and country before so it’s not that foreign - clearly you have the skills and experience needed to captain this new expansion team. hosting is big part of being captain off the ice, and while you suck at it, you know someone who’s very good at it - your teammate best friend who you hook up at a vacation wedding. you couldn’t talk this with your pr agent, because you and your friend/rival use the same agency and you don’t want anyone get the wrong idea - you’re not that desperate to get captaincy, you just think you would be better at it than the 19 y/o. said girl is also losing her mind in bend, oregon so it’s mutual benefits - she can get away from her overbearing parents and feeling trapped in her hometown. got a placed to stay and allowance. so while she’s actually a house manager / lived in helper, you guys are dating in public and she can used you and the whole hockey wag as her content (while she’s looking for a new job, when this whole schtick is over) and maybe you finally get to adopt a dog because you have a gf someone at home. and you hosted the team dinner at your new mansion and it doesn’t feel as lonely anymore. especially not with the new 18 y/o rookie your fake gf manages to convinced you to billet to raised you matured captain material stocked. got drunk and hooked up again, because both of you can’t really hooked up with someone else w/o exposing the fake dating thing which you hide from everyone. everyone else thinks you guys really get along after the wedding, and decided ldr not going to cut it. you guys met each other family on holidays and dad / mom trip, and suddenly you see her a different light. the whole reason you choose her (aside from the fact she already get along with the other teammate & their wags as she often hang out at family room with her best friend fiancée) is because she’s the only one who don’t blew up your phone, who didn’t turn all clingy after hooking up. even after you guys publicly dating and your other hook up send her “hey girl dm”, she’s so patient and help you clear up the issues that you felt bad for cheating on her for dragging her into your mess. the domesticity made you both catch feelings but both tried to hide it as to make it awkward but it does made it more awkward.
Veiled Truths (kavetham fic) Chapter Seven: “That’s odd…” Link to previous chapter: here To read on ao3 click: here Brief summary: The two academics hiding in the closet have been found…luckily for them, assistance has arrived! United by a shared goal, the newly formed group scouts for financial data…perhaps discovering things which none of them expected. Warnings: none! Word count: 1507 Notes: I’m so sorry for the holdup on this one, loves :( past few months were crazy in a good way! writing this chapter with a mild cold lol so please take care of yourselves! be sure to hydrate, and really hope you enjoy this chapter <3 P.S.: I promise next one is also going to be interesting!! on with the story, hehe “You call shoving both of us into a supply closet reasonable?” “Since you’re so smart, I’d love to hear your brilliant solution” “My solution would be having no solution at all. There’s nothing to solve” “I swear, Alhaitham if you don’t quiet yourself this instant-” Whispers came from a supply closet in the Akademiya Archive. How did the Scribe and an Akademiya professor end up in such a hiding spot? That’s a question you should probably ask the professor… The two were so deep in dispute that their attention deviated completely from why they were hiding in the first place. By the time they realized that the previously faint footsteps were now right in front of the supply closet, it was too late. The door swung open. Kaveh and Alhaitham squinted as light flooded their vision. Once their eyesight adjusted, they registered two figures staring back at them. Both with…very tall and unmistakably pointy ears? The figures observed the sight in front of them as well. Kaveh still had his hand placed on Alhaitham’s chest, unable to position himself differently in such a confined space. “Should we ask what you are doing there, or save you the embarrassment?” - A voice spoke. “Please don’t ask…this time, I don’t think I even want to know” - a second voice added. “It does seem pretty cozy over there though, ‘Nari…” “…” “…” “Go on…” “I believe we could even say they’re still…in the closet” Three pairs of eyes fell upon the one who just spoke. “…What? None of you got it? Because they’re in a closet together and they’re both me-” “THANK YOU, Cyno, for the very necessary elaboration. Now come on, get out of there” - Tighnari interrupted, before the situation became more chaotic. He reached out, lending both hands to help steady the figures climbing out from the confined space. “Thank Archons it’s you two!” - Kaveh exclaimed while climbing out. “Really though, how did you guys end up in the supply closet?” Kaveh glanced at Alhaitham, who in response simply raised an eyebrow. “Well, there were footsteps, and…we panicked?” “Correction, Kaveh panicked. Apparently his stress response is shoving people into closets.” “Listen, it’s the best thing that came to my mind, okay? If you had any better solutions you should’ve told me from the start!” - Alhaitham simply scoffed in response. “But I have a better question…Cyno, Tighnari, how come both of you are in the archive after closing? How did you even get in…I thought we closed the door shut. It would’ve been horrible if someone got locked in for the night” “Indeed…what are you two doing here after closing?” Cyno glanced at Tighnari, and after receiving a nod spoke: “I’m here alongside Tighnari” “…” “…” “…” “Cyno, you…may want to elaborate a bit” - the forest ranger spoke. “I’ll just let you do the honors” After a sigh, Tighnari obliged. “Don’t have much of a choice. I am here on behalf of the forest rangers. We have been having issues with funding for the past couple months. As chief, I tried figuring things out in a diplomatic way, but the Akademiya funding committee refused to give any explanation. It seems like they’re trying to withhold information from us. So, I decided to figure things out on my own. And, well, Cyno…” “I’m just tagging along” “Cyno” “Yes?” “Aren’t you the…General Mahamatra?” - Alhaitham asked. “I am” “…I thought you’re supposed to enforce law…” “…what exactly is your point?” Just a millisecond before responding, Alhaitham caught sight of Kaveh, who stood behind Cyno. The blonde stared right back, eyes narrow, brows low. Alhaitham got the hint. “…Well then, seems the four of us have a shared goal” “And what goal would that be, exactly?” - Cyno questioned. “We are looking for any and all information tied to an individual under the name of Jabir Faris” - Alhaitham responded. “That’s odd…” - Tighnari said. “What is?” “Jabir Faris is. We were skimming through financial records, and Jabir Farisis a name we somehow saw on almost every page, despite him never having been registered as an official member of the Akademiya funding committee” “That’s odd…I personally know him simply as an Akademiya professor” - Kaveh added. “Is this by any chance the same Akademiya professor you mentioned when you knocked at our door on a random Tuesday night, falling onto the couch, claiming your career at the Akademiya is in shambles?” - Tighnari inquired. “…there is…a chance of that, yes” “Well, Kaveh, now I know why you were absent that Tuesday night” “What is that supposed to mean?!” “A heads up would have been appreciated” “I am under no obligation to report such things to you!” “It was your night to do the dishes, Kaveh. I woke up to a sink full of dirty dishes, and an obligation to make breakfast for both of us. A breakfast, which, may I remind you, you were very pleased to have when you came back later. So, as I previously said, a heads up next time would be appreciated” “I can’t believe we’re doing this here, oh my Archons, FINE, fine, next time I will inform you in advance! Now can we PLEASE come back to the task at hand?” “…” “…” “…right…so…” - Tighnari uttered, uncertain of how to react. “So not only is that guy somehow tied to the funding committee despite not being a part of it, but he is also a threat to Kaveh’s Akademic career” - Cyno chimed in. “And apparently all four of us are on the lookout for information regarding him” “Which parts of the archive have you and Cyno checked so far?” - Kaveh asked “We looked through all the aisles in the area behind the supply closet, but we didn’t find much. If there’s anything, it’s probably up ahead” “Kaveh and I looked through most aisles in the middle, so the few aisles left are the ones which have the highest probability of containing the required documents. It’s best Kaveh and I check the ones in the end, while Cyno and you look through the ones up front” - Alhaitham chimed in. “Are you really giving out instruc- ugh, nevermind” “…sounds like a good approach! Let’s do that” - Tighnari agreed with the idea. And with that, the four broke into pairs and walked separate ways. Once out of earshot: “Were you really giving out instructions to everyone just now?!” - Kaveh whispered to Alhaitham. “Is there a problem with that?” “Is there a- Gosh Alhaitham! I can’t believe I have to explain this to you. Yes! There IS a problem with you giving out random instructions to our friends who we came across two minutes ago!” “Kaveh, if you have any suggestions which could be more effective, you are always welcome to share them. I suggested the most efficient solution. And from what I recall, it is in your interest for this task to be completed as quickly as possible” “The formulation was absolutely unnecessary. It sounded much more like a boss telling off a subordinate than you trying to efficiently resolve a situation” “I strongly suggest you save any recommendations you have for me regarding formulation for later, and focus on the task currently at hand” Kaveh just rolled his eyes in response. Five minutes. Ten. Thirty. The hands on the clock would have been moving agonizingly slow unless the four in the archive hadn’t been so deep in analysis. Document after document, they worked through the aisles. Each file was checked thoroughly, afterwards either being discarded and put back in its place, or put alongside other relevant documents. Though the “relevant” pile of documents was steadily increasing, no major breakthrough had yet been achieved. “I think we have enough relevant documents to conclude the search, Kaveh” “But I thought we were looking for something that would give us a strong lead, solid information…not just a set of documents with similar information” “I expected you to be a bit more enthusiastic about this task being complete” “Fine, fine. I’ll just skim through the last file” “Suit yourself. I will take our findings and go let Cyno and Tighnari know we’re wrapping things up” “Mmm - the committee declares - with the procedures further noted -” - Kaveh was already rushing through the first paragraphs of the file. Alhaitham exited the aisle as Kaveh kept reading aloud to himself. Though he couldn’t say the task was completed to its full extent, the information gained from the files was satisfactory. “Cyno? Tighnari?” “Here!” - the two echoed. Alhaitham clutched the documents firmly and made his way towards the sound. “Kaveh and I just wrapped things up on our end. He is skimming through the last document. I believe we have the required data to go through with the evaluation we came here for. I also think it’s going to be beneficial for the forest rangers. I can take the documents which you-” “ALHAITHAM!” A panicked voice screamed from a few aisles ahead. The tone made Alhaitham freeze. “ALHAITHAM COME HERE!” That was enough for Alhaitham to shove the documents into Cyno’s hands, and hastily make his way back to Kaveh.
Even if I don’t get a bingo I think it will be fun to try and write like 5 more before the end date…just to see… not to scare anything away too soon or anything
The Fake Dating trope got me againnnn There’s just something about the honest conversations it invokes that is like catnip to me. Oh, you’re going to slowly become best friends and tell each other your secrets and relationship hangups because you think it doesn’t matter and then it ends up mattering the most? Okayyy 🥲
Fake dating for the fanfic trope grading!!
Ooh thanks for asking! Fake dating is probably a D from me, I do tend to avoid it. I’ve definitely read some amazing ones so I considered giving it a C, but I think I outright skip it too often these days to give it anything other than a D. It’s been quite a while since I took the leap to give one a try, even when they do objectively sound really great. I think maybe it’s a combination of this particular flavor of miscommunication combined with the second-hand embarrassment/discomfort of the situations they often end up. I used to give it a try more often, because the premises and other present tropes often do sound amazing and it can be really amusing if the author goes a comedic route with it, but I ended up cringing away too often for it to feel worth it. Send me a fanfiction trope and I’ll grade it
showbiz | question!! would you guys prefer slow burn or it to move a little fast cuz i feel like with a fake dating au you cant really do it too fast paced but i feel like if you do it slow then it starts to just drag along so maybe on the scale of 1-10 1 being fast 10 being slow burn what would you prefer???
My favorites: My works, all visible on A03 here: https://archiveofourown.org/users/wordsandthings My favorites (in no particular order): All the Love I Can’t Repay (BG3): A work in progress nearing the end. This story mostly follows the canon of the game, with a handful of changes and embellishments. It follows Astarion and the Dark Urge on their journey and focuses on trauma and the peaks and valleys of healing. It has its light moments but also has many heavy themes. A Spectacular Failure (BG3): A post-game fic following an OC Tav and Astarion. He’s been pining for her from the start but she’s always kept him at arms length, but now in a classic fake dating trope she has to let him in. This is the fic I had the most fun writing and I’m very proud of it. I even wrote a full alternate ending because once it was done I couldn’t put it down. Full of tension, mutual pining, fluff, and angst. A Recipe for Disaster (Palia): My first work on A03. Another fake dating fic (I love the trope) and this is a very fun, cute, and light fic while still having depth to it.
