Adrianne Lenker as Byler I saw someone doing this with Phoebe Bridgers and I was inspired. Also, I am autistic about Adrianne Lenker she is so cool. HERE’S WHATS ABOUT TO HAPPEN: Adrianne is so locked in that she has many many albums that I cannot go through in this post right now so this will be a SERIES!!! I’m gonna go through all of the songs on each album and say why they relate to byler or Mike or Will individually (or maybe other stranger things characters if I’m feeling crazy ketchups). I will go through them chronologically SO we will be starting with Hours Were the Birds!!! (under the cut) JUST TO PREFACE: I do not listen to this album very much so I might not have a lot of things to say about the songs…I WILL STILL TRY MY BEST!!! Hours Were the Birds: This song is about someone traveling with a lover and calling them their home. The lyrics “I have met all kinds of reasons why the seasons leave their scars” really stuck out to me in relation to Will for obvious reasons…the fact that every season is ruined for him is so tragic. I also liked the lyrics “I am hanging by the edges of my name, but I am warm” in relation to either Will or Mike. Will, because of his past with his father, his last name being tainted by Lonnie Byers, or because of the bullying and harassment associated with his name, people saying the Byers’s are “crazy” or “weird”. This also feels like Mike because it has the energy of falling and grabbing on, he has nothing left except his name because he’s hidden the rest of his emotions and self inside of him, deep. With the actual meaning of the song, the feelings of being so in love you’d go anywhere with a person is so Will Byers to me. He would go anywhere so long as he could stay with Mike. “I’ve got you, and you’ve got me” is so good and expressing how byler thinks about themselves, especially in the early days and after the finally. Lighthouse: This one is about being absolutely enamored and in love with someone. This song is so Will Byers it hurts. It talks about being in love with someone who doesn’t love you as much or doesn’t love you back. The chorus with the “one for the money, two for the show, three for the body and the heart that knows/that knows I’ll never ever let you go” is so crazy. It’s so Will in the way that he will never truly stop loving Mike, it will be years into the future, he will be completely moved on, and he will still love Mike in some small, young, part of him. The lyrics “dispel all this noise, bring back the joy” are so Will wanting things to go back to the way things were before he got taken, when they would just play DnD in Mike’s basement. Disappear: This song is about “disappearing” into dreams. It talks about being scared or resentful of your dreams and preferring being awake then in bed asleep. This doesn’t really fit byler very well but I feel like it can fit anyone. They all have trauma from the upside down and get nightmares and stuff. If your into Mike getting Vecna’d AUs than this could be a song about him wanting to stay awake so Vecna can’t invade his mind while he sleeps. Not a lot to say about this one except that this was my first time listening to it and it was very good! Gone: So so Will Byers I’m just saying that now. This one, I’m pretty sure, is about someone who loved someone once and that person no longer loves them back. It is also so Miwi vs. Season 3 onward byler dynamic with “you came, and you gave me the deepest parts of you” and it’s them saving each other with the same memory, its them being “special friends”, its them knowing each other so deep and intrinsically that no one can break their bond. “But I held you so tight your breath burned on my skin” in relation to the rain fight OW OW OW. Also, “fixing my heart in my hands and my brain but we knew we couldn’t stay” is so this. Mike Wheeler who is soft and kind and caring to Will, but then he grows up and isn’t that anymore. Will having to deal with the dichotomy of the two Mike’s he knows in his mind. “And when you leave, part of you, part of me, will start to breathe” is so crazy when you think about Will Byers who grew into himself in Lenora and started getting hit on by girls and stuff when he was away from Mike. I actually don’t know how to tell you how Will Byers coded this song is you just have to listen to it yourself. Steamboat: Firstly, I love this song so much. This one is also Will Byers in a way of him coming back from the Upside Down and being a shell of himself or a “zombie boy”. BUT this one is so so so Mike Wheeler. This is a Mike who is a shell of himself, trapped behind the front he puts up. He tries to be strong and independent but he just feels like he’s “only a ghost, like [he’s] only a walker”. This song is so the broken man we saw in the epilogue giving his friends the lives they dreamed about while he is going to stay writing and mourning Jane forever. This is so him hoping for more but knowing (not really) that he could never live up to the expectations he puts on himself. “I’ve been arranging each of my movement/and all of my gestures and trying to fool myself/into thinking that everything is small, that nothing has reason” is the epitome of this. This isn’t even getting into his repressed sexuality (that we all know he has) where he is trying to fit in and be normal but he wishes one day he can be himself. To Violet: This one is just an instrumental and I very beautiful and wonderful one at that. BUT ALAS it does not have any lyrics I can relate to about byler. Hmu if you wanna talk about it more in detail. Indiana: Other than this songs name I don’t have a lot to say about this one in terms of byler. It is a beautiful and gorgeous song though and you should totally check it out. The only thing I can really think of is that it talks about someones father telling them to “leave it” and that could be Lonnie Byers vibes but idk I don’t really think so. This might be my most listen to song on this album though. Butterfly: This one is about growing up and forgetting intrinsic things about yourself like your childhood and your whimsy. Sound familiar? Mike Wheeler I know it’s you. “How I grew up and forgot about the only things I knew” and it’s the rain fight again and it’s Mike asking Will about playing games in his basement forever. This song uses a metaphor of a butterfly throughout (hence the name) and at the end the butterfly gets crush in the window which I think is a beautiful way to show how “growing up” and out of your childish wonder and joy can kill you. Just like my good close personal friend Mike Wheeler. Reference to the epilogue. It is also about feeling detached from yourself which I personally think Mike feels all of the time especially in season 5 with his cardboard cutout self. Mike Wheeler there is still time. Snow Song: God this one is Mike Wheeler too. This is specifically and especially epilogue Mike. The “lord I know my timing’s off and all the earth is ragged to the bone” in relation to Mike’s relationships with his friends and namely Will who he is sending off into the world. Its like he realized he fucked up long ago and its to late to solve the things he did when he was thirteen so he is resigning himself to live forever alone in misery. This is also shown with the lyrics “tired is the burning sea that calls me to the bottom like a stone, and I’m sinking alone”. The depression and grief in his eyes during that epilogue, his conformist hair. He really is sinking alone and he is not even trying to save himself. Someone save Mike Wheeler. OH AND the writer imagery is too much “I’ll poor the ink down though my pen in sentences that will defend my misery until the end”. That is crazy when he said he would just keep on writing. This song is even more Mike Wheeler coded than the song before it. Please Mike Wheeler there is still time. A Love of Some Kind: This song is about strangers in some kind of way. It is about craving love in some kind of way even when they don’t know each other. It is about being sad and lonely and just needing someone. Honestly kinda milkvan but idk. Not very byler coded unless you think about Will Byers craving love alone in NYC and needing someone because Mike has stayed behind. I just hurt my own feelings. Bruv do you remember when I said that I might not write a lot well guess what? 1400 words of lyrical analysis on a tuesday night…I didn’t even really try or have a thesis or anything I just kinda wrote. Hope you liked it even though it was super long and annoying to read it was very fun to write.

“I see why people sre so attatched to them being best friends but they really don't have any fun together. All of thier relationship is built on traumtic moments” Interesting, I guess I and a lot of Bylers are drawn to intensity and don’t really see “fun” as the standard for what makes a best friendship significant. But people are drawn to different things entirely

“Guys pls i want more for us but this why people call us fools. I really do enjoy Bylers dynamic but i wouldn't even call them a love story let alone the greatest. They have no real anything tbh.” It’s my genuine perspective, not everyone has to agree. To me, it’s the greatest love story of all time. I don’t care if anyone calls me a “fool” for stating my opinion. People are drawn to Byler because they really feel this way

I genuinly wish more people knew about yet another one of the greatest fics featuring Mike ‘Will you have to practice" Queeler. The fic in question is 'An old diskette in the summer of 89’ Genuinly so peak
The way they put Smalltown Boy in Mike's song list is really funny given that it didn't contribute to his arc at all, unless it was just about him being a boy in a small town. The reason why so many of us analyzed the songs on characters lists was because we thought it would represent or give insight to their arcs. Smalltown Boy is usually accepted as a story of a young gay man leaving his unaccepting hometown to seek a more welcoming community, thus is seen as part of queer culture. This is basically Will's story so they may have as well as put this song in Will's list, especially when they made him leave Hawkins to find a new life for himself where he's accepted and loved.
I have no idea who was responsible for making those playlists. However, there are two things I am convinced of: They didn’t have any long-term story details. The lists were made solely based on known information at the time. The songs were likely mostly chosen based on their titles and genre to fit the theme of the character the list was for. So, yeah, Mike is a “small town boy” and the song fit the theme his list seemed to follow in terms of sound. I don’t think the deeper meanings of the songs had anything to do with it. That would follow the greater usage of music in the Stranger Things soundtrack, to be honest. Just look at how Can’t Fight This Feeling was used for Mike and El at the start of season 3. It’s a song about someone fighting back feelings they have for someone, straying, but trying to build up the courage to act on those feelings. Yet it plays while Mike and El are aggressively making out. No feelings are being fought at this point. So why did they choose it? Probably because neither of them are fighting their feelings at in the scene. It totally misses the point of the song, but the title line matches the action on screen. The really sad thing is that it absolutely fit what we thought was going on with Mike, how we thought he was fighting his feelings for Will by being with El. Alas, Mike was just a boy who was bad at feelings (but only with El, I guess), so he would go on to put distance between himself and El because…he felt unworthy of her. God, that still sounds so stupid. I agree that if they cared to make that song make any sense on a playlist, it would’ve been on Will’s. However, based on my two statements above, I doubt the people who made the lists knew what was going to happen with Will’s story, and his playlist sort of went in a different direction sound-wise. The playlists were just a big waste of time, but that wasn’t something I was able to convince people of.
"It’s not one-sided on screen. It’s the greatest love story of all time " im def a casual Byler shipper but "greatest love story of all time" and they don't even canonically tell each other thier feelings. Guys pls i want more for us but this why people call us fools. I really do enjoy Bylers dynamic but i wouldn't even call them a love story let alone the greatest. They have no real anything tbh. Most of what i love about them is almost entirely headcanon cause the source material is so lame.

ISSUE 9 (old upload) Good morning, Bylers, and happy Wednesday. Yes, it’s Wednesday. I guess we’re just following the official Hawkins tradition of things arriving slightly too late and emotionally complicated. Mike Wheeler would understand. As always, we appreciate every submission and kind word we receive, and we’re so grateful for the support. Have a great week! Website here!
