My Skill: Learn Any Language Daily writing promptIf you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?View all responses You read the title correctly. If I were to master any skill, it would be to learn any language. Not to learn language instantly or already know it instinctually, but to be able to learn a new language in an adequate amount of time, in spite of my ADHD. Knowing a second language is useful in a… My Skill: Learn Any Language
Wait so is cajun french and creole french different?
Uhhhhhhh– it’s complicated? Cajun Creole is a different dialect to Caribbean Creole. And there are different dialects of Caribbean Creole, if I’m remembering correctly I believe Haitian Creole specifically is like, considered the primary mother tongue to all the Creoles … ? Don’t quote me on that, but. There’s a lot of enslaved populations being human trafficked by the Dutch and French going on, lots of lower-class ethnic groups that were during the colonial era, technically from France, Belgium, and the Netherlands being shotgun blasted every which were going on by the Crowns, lots of mixing with aboriginal populations. Couple'a cheeky genocides for fun. Terms like ‘cajun’ exist because the entire french diaspora is an alphabet soup of origins. Colonization is a bitch for that. The TL;DR is, to oversimplify things, creole is to french what AAVE is to english. So there are, theoretically, native tongue white creole speakers– but because of racism, it’s mostly both a racial and linguistic distinction. That it is classified as a true pidgin is not not racially charged– you feel me? What you could call “Cajun french” is actually … Acadian french? Or a dialect of it? Which is distinct from the other francophonie canadian french dialects, but the descendants of the survivors of the acadian genocide here in canada that still speak acadian french is different now to the decendants of the survivors that live in Louisiana. There’s a lot of linguistic ambiguity as to what exactly acadian french, cajun french, and cajun creole begins and ends now because of all that. I hope … That makes sense?
Next time somebody corners you with their full chest and half a fact, telling you what Voodoo is, what Vodou does, what Voudou means, or what Vodun “really” comes from, do the merciful thing. Tell them to buy my book. Voodoo for Dummies is real. It is not a joke, a gag gift, a novelty title, or a cute little shelf ornament for people who think “gris-gris” is something you order with french fries. One person thought the book was a joke. It is not. To call the book a joke is to call my life’s work a joke, and that is where the floorboards start creaking. I have spent decades studying, documenting, practicing, teaching, correcting, preserving, and defending these traditions from people who learned one bad definition in a comment section and decided they were ready to testify before the ancestors. They are not ready. They are not even in the parking lot. This book exists because misinformation about Voodoo has had a very long, very profitable, very racist career. Hollywood helped it. Pulp fiction fed it. Colonial writers dressed it up in borrowed authority. Social media gave it a ring light and a podcast microphone. So yes, Voodoo for Dummies is for beginners. It is also for the loud wrong. The casually offensive. The “I saw a documentary once” crowd. The people who think all African-derived religions are interchangeable spiritual soup. The ones who say Voodoo when they mean fear, Vodou when they mean fantasy, Voudou when they mean New Orleans but can’t be bothered to learn New Orleans, and Vodun when they want to sound academic without doing the reading. Buy the book. Read the book. Gift the book to the loudest wrong person in the room. Leave it where misinformation likes to breed: break rooms, book clubs, family gatherings, comment threads, and anywhere somebody starts a sentence with “Well, actually …” Because the book is not the joke. The joke is thinking ignorance is a personality. And staying a dummy? That’s a choice. https://amzn.to/4w7rwio

Amazon.com Voodoo has survived colonizers, missionaries, Hollywood monsters, fake experts, and every fever dream ever stapled to it by people afraid of what they don’t understand. Now it gets a yellow-and-black cover. Voodoo for Dummies is coming, and no, it is not here to make Voodoo cute, safe, or palatable. It is here to tell the truth plainly: Voodoo is a religion, a living tradition, a sacred inheritance, and a spiritual force that never needed anyone’s permission to exist. Preorder it. Read it. Let the pearl-clutching begin. 🔥
My Ancestry | A 400 Year Ethnic Mix - Labranche, Tate & Free People of Color Lineage (Post 1) After researching my linage during the pandemic, I encountered some amazing and dark ancestral items. Please note that I cannot deeply dive into my African and Choctaw Native American heritage due to a little something called slavery. There isn’t documentation of bloodlines, since people were taken against their will. There is, however, a plethora of ancestral linage I am able to track past to… My Ancestry | A 400 Year Ethnic Mix - Labranche, Tate & Free People of Color Lineage (Post 1)

My Ancestry | The Free People of Color: A Legacy of Resilience and Identity History often paints the pre-Civil War era in stark black and white—enslaved or enslaver. However, nestled within the complex social fabric of the Americas, and particularly within Louisiana, lived a significant group known as the Free People of Color (gens de couleur libres). This community occupied a unique, often precarious “third space” in society, and for me, this isn’t just a history… My Ancestry | The Free People of Color: A Legacy of Resilience and Identity
