Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons (Spoilers) Okay, it was good! And moreover the fan art that I’ve seen online has been amazing. I had pretty low expectations coming into the theater, but the movie was well shot and a fun time. I really enjoyed watching the longer scenes of characters just being in the liminal space. Just the long suspense being held while Clarke investigates the strange space and keeps pushing deeper was fun. I like the deeper messaging and themes as well. The idea that there’s this other plane of existence that is trying to make copies of us and our world, and that those copies are not only imperfect but that they may in fact reflect something about us is super intriguing and an amazing route the film decided to go down. I wouldn’t have been mad if it was all just ‘ooh scary liminal space,’ but I like the direction the story went down instead. Plus we get some scary rooms and monster stuff anyway (though to be fair, the real world proves to be just as dangerous and terrifying in the movie as well.) Also, moreover, it’s awesome that Kane Parsons made such a good movie at his age. I’m really glad more indie creators are getting the chance to be in theaters and are finding success in doing so. It’s refreshing to see. I wouldn’t call Backrooms like revolutionary in the horror genre, but it holds up. And I imagine if you’ve somehow never interacted with the concept of liminal spaces, it would be an incredible watch.
I miss nuance and morally gray characters without the fanbase dulling them down to “perfect baby who does no wrong” and “evil fucking monster”!!!!!!! is this about the backrooms…..well yes! I love Clark guys but it gets to a point also also I think the idea that the film is racist and ableist for depicting a black man with mental illness and acting violently says more about you than the film. Clark could have been any race, and he’d still act the same, because the movie doesn’t center around that! they only chose that actor because he portrayed the character of Clark the best, cmon. the whole trope of “saint/wise poc character” in media is already harmful enough (and yes, depicting them as aggressive can be bad too, it’s a double edged sword) because we are still people who can have flaws!!!!!!! and characters in any movie and show that are poc should be allowed to be flawed without accusations of racism or being done in bad faith!!!! (if executed correctly)
I liked the lore for the backrooms movie, but one of my favorite things about the web series was the fact that the research institute which initially discovered and accessed the backrooms did so with the intention of exploiting them for free real estate.
I think they should leave the backrooms set up and let other tv shows use it. Like the gang from Sunny in Philadelphia fall in or the cops from the Rookie stumble in. It can even be treated as ‘it was just a dream’ episodes or 'was that just a dream?’. Think it would be pretty cool. A new version of Alice in Wonderland dropping in.
Me getting on bluesky to reskeet the Deltarune “Jockington grows the beard” post before i watch the backrooms movie tonight(?) only for my feed to immediately show me gooseworx’s latest post. (i forgot to block the backrooms tag on bluesky) (i spent the last couple weeks on my side account and forgot about my main account.) (when i switched to my main account i had fewer blocked tags set up.) (🙂)
Being a chronic nightmare-haver in rural Wisconsin is crazy cos literally EVERYWHERE is either a liminal space or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre house.
Not sure if anyone has spoken on this yet, but I believe that Kane Pixels has stated that he doesn’t like the use of AI. As someone who has watched the backrooms movie, I believe it was an amazing work of art and it saddens me to see that many people are feeding certain scenes into AI. Not only are they feeding scenes into AI, but they are continuing to make AI “content” with the characters from this movie. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that people have done this with a movie and it shatters my heart to see how so many people treat movies like this. Therefore, I don’t believe that people should be using AI on the Backrooms nor any other movie nor supporting “content” that is made with AI. Not only is generative AI destructive to our community, but it is to our creativity. Please spread this.
i have to draw something that shows that i actually like the movie and its themes before i start ocposting and clark^2posting. I am in LOVE with the way kane parson interpreted the backrooms. that’s so fucking awesome and CREEPY it was both a really original way to do it and yet still a love letter to that spooky 2019 early 2020s era of analog horror and psychological horror. and it surprisingly made for such a succinct story (i would’ve expected it to be more vague or difficult to make venturing into the backrooms a story but no the symbolism is like there in your face). i wanna joke around and make things because some things struck an auto chord in me but i want to show that i actually really like the movie and not just like. The Backrooms™️(backrooms art that was created because of the movie but in its contents entirely disconnected to the kane parson interpretation) or the fanon because for once i actually like the original media in its entirety instead of me carving out a chunk of something random and start mutating it in a lab for my liking (stares at It.) (ntls watches something and gets invested for once no way this happens once in a blue moon)
Movies have been out for a while, but thought I’d discuss them. Obsession is simply one of the best horror films of the year and is just about perfect. From the soundtrack to the lighting. Inde Navarrette does an amazing job as Nikki and I hope she receives at least a recognition at the Oscar’s. Bear is such a sniveling, pathetic character that you can’t help but pity at least until he crosses the point of no return. I like how the OWW is not inherently cursed but Bear’s wish absolutely is. It discusses autonomy, male gaze, free will when it comes to love, etc. Like it makes it clear Bear doesn’t actually love Nikki. If he did he’d know about her likes and dislikes. Instead he views Nikki in how she makes him feel. It also tears down entitlement. Bear, as a “nice guy,” believes he’s entitled to Nikki’s love even if it meant the real Nikki suffers. If he could have manned up, none of this would have happened. It discusses the toxicity of codependency. Backrooms I didn’t immediately love, but it did grow on me. I loved how open to interpretation the Backrooms are such as the interpretation that it’s a metaphor for generative AI and how it has its imperfections. The Backrooms “remembers” someone but does so incorrectly. It also discusses how people go to therapy to seek validation rather than work on bettering themselves. Clark is a whiny alcoholic who blames others for his shortcomings forcing Mary to realize she can’t save someone who doesn’t want to change. The liminal space is haunting and claustrophobic. It’s maddening. The only flaw is that Clark seems to go insane too fast, but that’s a minor gripe. The story is told in an unconventional manner that requires you to think more about it, and the more I thought of it the more I liked it.
