Superfan’s Short Movie Reviews: “Disclosure Day” I find it hard for me to put into words exactly how I felt after seeing this movie, but I’ll do the best I can. Leave it to a legendary filmmaker like Steven Spielberg to give us something that moves you so deeply that it stays with you long after you leave the theater. That’s what this one did for me. Seriously, Spielberg is once again at the top of his game here, even with a subject matter that he’s explored before, but done in a way that still feels relevant, especially in our current landscape. Every frame feels like seeing a master painter at work. The structure, the suspense, the deep emotions from the actors, the framing and compositions, John Williams’ score, everything, sinks into you as the film keeps going. So much so that by the time it reaches its climax, you will find yourself in a state of awe, holding your breath until the very last frame. This has no doubt earned a spot on my list of favorite movies of the year so far. The fact that Spielberg is still making movies like this all these years later is a true testament to his skills within the craft.
Well, I watched “Disclosure Day” yesterday, and had to think about it. This movie is a phenomenal big film, with great acting, cinematography, and direction. Thst doesn’t mean I loved it. The writing is my biggest issue, and it just feels a bit off. Not bad, just not what I was hoping for. Steven Spielberg has again proven he knows how direct a movie, but I don’t know if this proves he can still write one.
RF:Ph04:Ch65: The Terminator At Marvel Comics it wasn’t only the X-Men who were having issues with time travellers from dystopian futures. In 1983, The Incredible Hulk found himself fighting a soldier who has accidentally been transported back in time, from a war-torn future. The story was interesting enough but observant readers quickly spotted the resemblance between the comic and the first episode of season 2 of the TV… RF:Ph04:Ch65: The Terminator
So, I just watched “The Furious”, a phenomenal action film. It is not a super well written movie woth great dialogue, or a earthshattering new story, but it understands that. It knows what it is, and focuses on what makes the movie great which fills up like 70% of the film, and that is the beautifully choreographed fight scenes. Every fight scene is so much fun, and so unique, and it really is just a kung-fu movie love letter.
Notice how no other filmmaker has fans who constantly resort to lame playground insults like this in order to prove how smart they think they are. Between that, and the endless barrage of insipid “can you believe he was almost 30 when he made Magnolia?????” comments, you’d be hard pressed to find a more insecure fanbase. These people rarely actually talk about his films or why they love them. These people don’t seem to love his films as much as they love the idea of loving them. It’s a fashion statement to them. They love how clever it makes them feel.
Elevator to the Gallows 4/5 Miles Davis’ trumpet sets noir tones like nobody else can. The movie swaps between several characters as acts of crime and violence take place. The plot runs on coincidence, but to its advantage. Each happenstance is plausible but unexpected as the simple little plan spirals out of anybody’s control. The cinematography captures the shadows of the world, from the streets and cafes at night to the grey void of the interrogation room. Letterboxd
