#pigma Dengar

I have to wonder how much of Pigma's personality when confronting SF is a 'show'/mask and what isn't. How much he changed since betraying James, or before then->then, etc.. Or if he's always sort of been like that and it was just the start.

If this were before we saw the prologue of Star Fox 2026, I would theorize about how much he might or might not have cared about his teammates before the betrayal. After seeing the betrayal scene however… Pigma was totally checked out of whatever friendship they might have had by the time of the betrayal. The way he was like “Hey Peppy! Catch!” with the bomb totally matches up with his taunting that we see later. I think, if he was friends with James and Peppy before - and in a proper story (imo) he would have been - their relationship was deteriorating long before Venom. Friendship and maybe even brotherhood turning to scorn and spite for whatever reasons. We know he and James argued about money. Maybe Pigma felt taken advantage of? Maybe jealous that he wasn’t getting enough work on his own, so he had to follow a “bleeding heart” leader like James. Maybe Peppy annoyed him with his constant worrying and caution. Maybe they weren’t ever truly friends and James was the link between them? I can’t say for sure. All of that said, Pigma’s taunting remorseless assholery being a mask? That’s a really interesting idea. That he portrays this remorseless man who delights in taunting his former wingman, rubbing in the betrayal… as a mask to keep his emotions at bay. Maybe if he portrays the remorselessness long enough, it’ll become real. Maybe he still hears James’ dying screams in his nightmares. Maybe he hears Peppy’s scornful tone and something in his chest hurts. Something he doesn’t want to acknowledge. Something he wants to get rid of. At some point I need to do a character study oneshot on Pigma. He is such an interesting character when you dive into the ‘why’ of his betrayal (beyond “he’s just a greedy bastard”) and how it might have affected him.

I keep wondering how Pigma who is the least inconspicuous character in star fox in a game full of campy characters and radiates malicious glee, Pigma “I’ll do you fast, Peppy old pal!” Dengar managed to deceive his teammates. While they were heading to Venom and Pigma was radiating aforementioned malicious glee did James and Peppy just turn to each other and go Man it’s good to see him excited about something I guess and went with it

I feel like he’d be kinda like Mr Krabs, probably cheap out on almost everything for them, but still loves them, I also see him being a little too laid back, letting the kid do whatever they want as long as they don’t get hurt physically

James and Pigma’s Eyes One thing that has always been interesting about Pigma and James is how they both seem to have something up with their eyes. James is always wearing sunglasses even in the darkness of space. Pigma meanwhile has this going on: ALT Whether that black around Pigma’s eyes is a heavy shadow or a mask always seems to be up for debate. Starlink, especially, seems to make it look like a mask. Why he wears this mask - if that’s what it is - is unknown. While Leon and Andrew get augmentations to their eyes in their post Star Fox fight appearance in 64 and Zero, Pigma doesn’t. His eyes are turned red in 64 and that’s it as far as his eyes changing. This may lend evidence to him wearing a mask? And that mask being an augmentation for his eyes? Maybe? I don’t know. For Star Fox Restored, I went with Pigma wearing a mask. He wears a mask for the same reason James is always wearing his sunglasses. Both were nearly blinded in a generator explosion. Pigma’s eyes didn’t heal nearly as well as James’ did. The mask is required for him to be able to see. James, meanwhile, kept his sight. At the cost of being extremely sensitive to light. He has different sunglasses for different light types. Be it bright sunlight planet side, or the blinking and glowing lights illuminating the arwing cockpit. Aside from having to wear sunglasses most of the time, James’ photophobia has also left him prone to migraines. Despite what James had to deal with, Pigma was always envious that he got to keep his sight. That he doesn’t have to wear a mask just to see. (This may have played a small part in the betrayal, as Pigma was envious of James for many things.)
