Aiden is “anti” helmet and pro “reckless”. He and the lovely Mrs Jones are locked in mortal combat. I documented this attempt to steal his sister’s bike and ride all out down this relatively steep embankment behind the new crib. (For the record, I did intervene and stopped the “ride”). 🆘🆘🆘 Why am I so over-protective and #anxious as a #parent? Don’t get me wrong. He should wear a helmet. But I think back to the crazy stuff we did on our bikes. When I think about Aiden doing that same stuff: mountain biking, reckless, wrecks etc … I get anxious. What happened to me? Why am I so cautious with my #kids? Day 21 of A to Z and Poetry U is for Undaunted Urban Urchin Undaunted urban urchin cloaked in velvet night moon’s light exposes Living in the city these days is forever changed. My siblings and I were free-range kids. No matter where we lived in the world, we ran free by bike, skate and foot until mother whistled us in briefly for lunch, for dinner at 6 and again at dark. After dinner, we’d run up to a friend’s and house. We’d lay out on the front or back yard staring at the night sky on summer nights hoping for a shooting star or ufo; imagining walking on the moon. We’d reluctantly go in when called in at 8 or 9 or sometimes 10, only to go out the next day and do it all again. Today, my friends with small children keep them in secure back yards, and sit in chairs to watch them in the front yard or drive them to ‘play dates. The Sprouts has another full day. We will start our homeschool adventure in a few weeks using #blossomandroot but for now we just enjoying each other’s company and learning how to be in each other’s company all the time. 🌱 Today we made homemade play dough or #forestputty. We actually used our @msr_gear pocket rocket to cook it outdoors and adds the same natural coloring we used in our mud painting yesterday. 🌱 Just making it was lots of fun (we made and will post a video later), then we used it for several activities through the day - simple sensory play, tree faces, and mortar fro the beginnings of a fairy house (we might have an idea for tomorrow’s theme). 🌱 While we might not officially be homeschooling yet, the Sprouts worked on so many skills - following a recipe, pouring and measuring, pre-writing hand skills of stirring and kneading, body parts, emotions, and structure building. HOW GORGEOUS HAS IT BEEN TODAY? Oh man did we need some vitamin D in our bones! We had a family trip to our local ‘seaside’ town of #matlockbath . A picnic in the park and a spot of park cricket, a long walk, beer in beer garden and a bit of shop browsing along the way! ITS THE WEEKEND! What have you got planned this weekend? We’re off on yet another camping trip! ⛺️ This time it’s a family camp with the Beavers Scouts and Cubs families! Every year it’s been awesome, with some great local families who all have kids in scouting. The amazing leaders who put this on for us every year (mark and Suze) are incredible and are expecting their latest new addition in August. As a parent, this is one of the things that makes me most happy. 🤗 To see our son grazing straight off the plant gives me the assurance that, no matter what, he will be ok.
