“Vira’s 24-Hour EKG” is dedicated to a friend, and combines appliqué and hand embroidery in the same piece. For the body I used a semi-transparent, flexible fabric made of gold rosé metallic threads, which gives the figure a quality that sits somewhere between fragility and luminosity. The clothing is cotton with a subtle pink and white print — during sewing, the cotton resisted stretching and developed an unintentional waviness, like fabric draped on a body rather than laid flat. In the piece, Vira wears a portable 24-hour EKG device, the same kind I once wore myself, in one of my earliest medical embroideries. #embroidery, #textile art, #hand embroidery, #appliqué, #figurative art, #medical art, #contemporary embroidery, #fiber art,
