The Raider of a Lost Art Scorsese: George came out of West Coast avant-garde cinema and his first picture, THX-1138, was quite abstract and haunting. But he and Steven were united on a different level. They both loved the idea of movies as immersive experiences. Harrison Ford, actor: George and Steve are like brothers from a different mother. They’re effortless with each other. Hanks: The scene in Jaws when they’re comparing scars and their broken hearts, and it’s those great actors, Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw. That kind of camaraderie — I don’t know that Steven’s had that with other men outside of the director community. He gets together with Francis and Marty and Guillermo del Toro and all those guys, and he’s in the warm embrace of like-minded male companionship. I think he yearns to have that. Look at the relationship between Dreyfuss and François Truffaut in Close Encounters. There’s even a great scene in Jaws when Scheider is just sitting with his son and his son starts doing imitations of him at the dinner table. -/// Lucas: He was trying to get E.T. off the ground, and I said, “I’ll pay for that. I’ll produce that.” He said, “Well, I’ve got to take it to Universal because I have a contract with them.” Before that, he was going to do it for Columbia, which produced Close Encounters, but they said, “That’s a children’s movie! Nobody’s going to go see a children’s film.” I said, “Well, that’s nonsense. Star Wars was a children’s film, and everybody went to see it.” Kennedy: One morning, he goes, “We should find somebody who’s written more children’s stories.” And I said, “Well, Harrison Ford is going out with this girl, Melissa MathisonMathison later wrote Frank Oz’s The Indian in the Cupboard, Scorsese’s Kundun, and Spielberg’s The BFG. , who wrote Black Stallion.” She was there on set with us during Raiders. She responded right away to what it was we were trying to do. In between shots and on weekends we met with her and talked with her about the story. Melissa ended up turning in a first draft and Steven said, “This is the first time this has ever happened to me. This is a shootable first draft.” Ford: E.T. developed very much around our kitchen table. As she was writing, our kids were involved in Dungeons & Dragons games with some of the Raiders cast. Kennedy: Melissa was a phenomenal partner to Steven. Melissa had kids at the time. Steven didn’t. So, she was bringing that sensibility to it. —— He knows where that leverage is, where that pressure needs to be applied. As an actor, you are being placed in the perfect position to say the lines, “The list is life. The list is an absolute good, and all around its margins lies the gulf.” As you turn your head, Janusz will shift focus from Liam to you halfway through that line, and it will hit the audience’s retina forever. Kennedy: It’s the only time I’ve ever seen this happen with Steven: I ended up having to take over the postproduction on Jurassic almost entirely because he was so immersed in Schindler. He couldn’t compartmentalize the way he had before. Kamiński: We were doing Schindler’s List, and he was having satellite transmission to look at the Jurassic effects, which was totally surreal. Koepp: He said that it was kind of a blessing sometimes, in that he’d had these incredibly intense days on set and then he’d come home and look at effect shots for several hours of dinosaurs running around. It was actually a great place to park his mind for a while.
A few thoughts on UFOs/UAP and extraterrestrial life… ******SAUCER-SHAPED SPOILERS!****** Growing up in the 1970s, UFOs (as they were called then) were wildly popular. I watched alien visitation/invasion movies, such as “The War of the Worlds” (1953), “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers” (1956), and “Invaders from Mars” (1953)–that last one really scared the hell out of me watching it alone on late-night TV at eight or nine years old. I remember even… A few thoughts on UFOs/UAP and extraterrestrial life…
because you sent me this ask the other day and because I'm curious about your answer now, what's your Everyone's Talking ranking? 👀
Ohhh yes!!!! I looked at yours briefly because I was just getting off work, but I’ll take a more detailed look in a little bit* :) *this is a good segue! Little Bit 10/10. Absolutely fantastic, top 3 ATL songs for sure (their order rotates.) I love how heavy it is and it always makes me want to dance. Great motivator and energizer for sure. Also PHENOMENAL live goddamn. Everyone’s Talking 10/10. I remember when everyone was in fact talking and I was like “this is nuts because these allegations were clearly false from Moment 1.” The song is super cathartic to me and I love how raw it is, the entire thing is fantastic and emotional Viva Las Vagus Nerve 10/10. Just a fun song. Has Don’t Panic vibes that kind of made me nostalgic for 2012. Yup. Falling for Strangers 10/10. I did NOT expect this song to go up in my rankings so much over time AND YET HERE WE ARE. It is so catchy and honestly takes a pretty original spin on a concept we’ve seen and experienced 1000 times before. The Weather 10/10. When this album hits, it really hits, and this is one of those times. Fun fact 1 is I have a The Weather lyric on my work coaster. Fun Fact 2 is that I listened to this song for the first time in an Uber while going with my ex to the airport, the last time I saw her. It hit. Cigarettes and Sabotage 9/10. Diamonds and Decolletage is one of the best lyrics and I love it. It also reminds me of my OCs and a book I’m writing, which kicks it up over SUCKERPUNCH (which I like about the same amount.) Bubblegum 9/10. Solid song, very catchy, and the NANANANAAAA NANA NANAAAA NANANANANANANANA does something good to my brain. SUCKERPUNCH 9/10. Catchy! Punky! Great sound and I love the guitar riff at the beginning. Cold Open 8.5/10. How I love this opener. It’s the perfect intro to the album and “a few years of trauma and magic tied up with a string and a bow” is the perfect Album Thesis Statement. Oh No! 8/10. I love this song and it’s Healing. I’m always happy to get to it when it pops up on the tracking. Goodnight Cest La Vie 8/10. I sing it every time I want Taco Bell. Butterflies 6/10. Meh. I won’t skip but won’t go out of my way to listen either. Different Languages 5/10. I feel like I would like it of I weren’t so knowledgeable about Alex’s life and were a more casual fan. The song is so pretty and I think I would give it like an 8/10 if I didn’t find it so grating. As it is, I skip. Tread Water 3/10. Just such a weird song. Like are they trying to be countryish? Why? Very irritating. Sugar 1/10. I genuinely REALLY dislike this song, I never feel this badly about ATL songs but it sounds Bad. Too poppy. Also too much Jojo, sorry. I initially gave this a 2/10 but then my brain yelled SHUGGGURRRRR in Jojo’s voice so I changed it.
