Tall Canyon Walls Caught in Morning Sunshine (Grand Canyon National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting extending to the west up a nearby canyon cliff wall while hiking along the Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon National Park. I was drawn to this setting with the vertical cuts in the walls and striations running across the image. In composing this image, I wanted to focus on that in how they were caught in the morning light of sunshine. The blue skies would then be that color contrast to complement the image with earth-tones present in the lower portion.

It is one of several images I captured, making minor metering adjustments due to the bright skies I was observing at that time of day. The rest of the image composition was marveling at how this was created over the millions of years with me there to enjoy and savor the setting that afternoon. And I would have to hike up it on the return part!

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Yellowstone National Park, 1983. Yellowstone, along with Glacier, is a National Park on my jinxed list. On a half dozen trips, only once, when I was in a hurry to cross the continent and could only spend a day, was the weather good. The visit when the photo was shot was scheduled to be several days long, but on arrival we were told a late Spring storm was expected, and park roads were likely to be closed. After about 5 hours to see a small selection of the park’s wonders, we departed, a good decision as the next day snow closed most of the major roads into and inside the park. Have not had an opportunity to visit since.
