travel entry 1 lost in translation cue theme song my first step into chennai, tamil nadu was like a blast of hell wetting my entire skins surface. thats harsh maybe of course what could you expect? the indian ocean is just mere miles (or kilometers) away from where i was standing. the air is forced into a constant state of evaporation ‘round here. delightful really. the hot wet air adjacent to the sweet ac of the airport put uncertainty into every step i put forward into this unknown tropical world. dogs scattered on the loud crowded streets, the sound was filled with honks and the conversations of the hundreds of people in a lanuage so familiar yet so incomprehensible. i felt stranded. alone. but excited? this city is so vast and lively i couldnt help but be intrigued by the screams of the man yelling at a black little dog who was singlehandedly blocking a huge array cars. brave little traffic dog. godspeed you. chaos aside, a thought still lingered. i didn’t belong there at that here at all. from the color of my skin im the most indian girl you would ever see. i was reminded of that constantly since pointing it out is just so humorous for people. “youre brown ha ha” HA. god, I KNOW. its my one stand out back home. it was just a color but it was MY color. my bloodline. my connection to my heritage. whether i was proud of it was an entirely different shameful story. but here? my identity is jumbled making a horrible ringing in my ear. im different. i can’t speak the language and i don’t know any customs. i felt like such a black sheep. so disconnected. do you know how that feels? losing your grasp with sonething that you never had in the first place. your sense of self. im looking down at my hands and feeling the sticky atmosphere like its draining me of my melanin. my color. i am so not in kansas anymore but whatever new country new meeeeee oh yeah all that drama? in the past fool.
