Im delighted that I’ve finally managed to get round to this novel and for the same amount of time, also avoided spoilers! We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves is a masterful, thought-provoking and engaging piece of work that was as surprising as it is accomplished. This is the story of a family who on the outside, seem relatively ordinary. We have Mother and Dad, Lowell the oldest boy and the two girls, Rosemary and her sister Fern. The narrative begins in the middle, from Rosemary’s point of view, for a very good reason, which we find out fairly early on. However, it makes it almost impossible to talk about it much further for reasons you’ll be familiar with if you’ve read this! This book really made me consider and explore my own personal morals and opinions. When I analyse my own moral compass, certain events happen in the story that I find to be completely despicable - but that’s just me. Those with the opposite views make look at it differently so in this way, it’s an excellent book for provoking discussion and conversations. I can also see why some readers may be triggered, especially if they are sensitive to certain issues so if you feel like that’s going to be you, you might want to read a review which reveals spoilers. We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves is a remarkable novel which achieved critical acclaim by being listed for the Booker prize but interestingly, I rarely hear people talk about it. Part of the power is in the element of surprise but this is sustained throughout by beautiful and emotional writing. It might be a novel that divides - some might say the pace is not quite right but I admired it for the feelings it invoked and the experience I had reading it. Thanks to @chrissireads for the pic! I finished Legends and Lattes by @travis_baldree This book has been the darling of Fantasy Fans since it’s release last year with many praising its “cosy fantasy” story as a nice tonic to the constant slew of Epic/Grimdark Fantasy. Being in the need for some cosiness I dove right in. The story that Baldree has written here brings me to doubt this was his debut, as Legends and Lattes has the confidence of an author who has been writing for decades. The characters are front and centre in this story, a requirement for the cosiness factor, and if they were lacking in proper development this would absolutely kill the book. Baldree manages to engage the reader in the first few chapters and you’re quickly fully engaged in wanting to find out how the orc Viv is able to make a success of opening her coffee shop and leave her warlike past behind her. Baldree follows in the footsteps of Fantasy authors like Terry Pratchett who wrote the characters as the focus of the story and let the world develop around them as opposed to vice versa. Sometimes it’s nice to read epic Fantasy where a gigantic dragon descends on a team of warriors who have fairly thin characterisation but you don’t care because the set piece is just too cool. But where Fantasy really shines is in stories that focus on the individual warriors and what they experience in the lead-up to and aftermath of that fight with the dragon. And when the big dragon is a particularly fussy clientele I’m reminded of the idea that, just because Fantasy deals with Orcs, magic and giant talking mice that bake pastries, doesn’t mean that there also isn’t room for coffee and good vibes too. Read this book if you want a Fantasy themed cwtch as they would say in Wales. Thank you to @megolass for getting the lovely @thebrokennbinding edition for Valentine’s Day. See in this picture my attempt at making Thimblets which appear in the book with a recipe! #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #books #fantasybooks #fantasy #legendsandlattes #travisbaldree https://www.instagram.com/p/CplMO1TMmdX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Hello everyone and welcome to the end of the week! Am I glad it’s Friday? 😅 Yes. The answer is YES 😂 Here’s the second part of my book haul that I picked up when @keeperofpages and I went book shopping before Christmas. I loved Maggie Shipstead’s novel Great Circle when I read it last year so was delighted to come across this, her short story collection, You Have A Friend In 10A. “Diving into eclectic and vivid settings, from an Olympic village to a deathbed in Paris to a Pacific atoll, and illuminating a cast of unforgettable characters, Shipstead traverses the ordinary and extraordinary with cunning, compassion and wit.” Next up, My Soul Twin. This was a must buy as @keeperofpages and I read and loved The Eighth Life. We’re going to be reading this as a buddy read together. It’s described as “a modern day Wuthering Heights - two families, one devastating secret, and an epic story of forbidden love.” Finally, Our Share Of Night which I have already read as a buddy read with @keeperofpages and absolutely loved. A review will be coming (at some point 😂) but it was a 5 star read for both of us! I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. The Book of Paradise by Itzik Manger ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An irreverent take on how Power looks to the powerless, how memories of home persist in exile, and how impossible it is to fit into preexisting systems when you are not considered “one of us”. Samuel Abba is a former angel who has just been born as a human baby, but still has all his memories of his life in Paradise. Samuel Abba’s Paradise is full of adulterers, despotic patriarchs, rising tensions, unrequited love, despair, poverty, prejudice, class distinction, drunkenness, violence, theft, domestic abuse, and segregation. On Earth, he is told by human authority figures that this can’t be true - these are Earthly problems. This is a humorous book, but the message of how it feels to live in exile, seeing the eradication of your home and your culture, hits very hard. body > iframe { min-width: auto !important } View this post on Instagram A post shared by Izzy || Bookstagram (@fromizzysbookshelves)
Hi everyone, it’s FRIDAY and time for another book haul 😜 Here I have two @illumicrate exclusive editions that arrived before the end of the year and a lovely clothbound classic, The Aeneid which I read with a great group of bookstagrammers and really enjoyed. The Luminaries looks absolutely beautiful. “In Hemlock Falls, where nightmares rise, only the Luminaries stand between humanity and these monsters bent on devastation. Winnie Wednesday knows the only way to redeem her disgraced family is to pass the Luminary trials, but when she encounters an unknown monster, she realises she must also protect Hemlock Falls and her heart from a former friend with secrets of his own.” Then we have The Red Scholar’s Wake which I’m initially a bit unsure of but we’ll give it a go! It’s described as “an exciting space opera and a beautiful romance, from an exceptional SF author.” I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Hi bookworm, Here is my monthly wrap up. I read 8 books and I didn’t talk about most of them. Tell me know if you want me to talk about any of these books. And about the ratings I think they have limitations and kind of vary in perspective. It’s not like i don’t rate..(i rate it very exclusively in my Goodreads review) Also how many books you have read in Feb? May your heart filled with love and days with books. Hello everyone and happy Saturday to you all. I was inspired by @salboreads to post this #bookstackforacause today which was first started by @contemporaryfiction and @katrin.loves.books March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month and this is a cause very close to my heart as I work in Bowel Cancer Screening. I’m passionate about raising awareness of the benefits of screening and it’s wonderful to hear of the cases of cancer we’ve been able to find and treat that people have been completely unaware of. It might not be a particularly pleasant thing to talk about but boy, is it important! Latest figures show that almost one third of people who were sent a screening kit in England last year didn’t complete it. Hopefully that will change as we get more comfortable speaking about this kind of issue. For every dark blue book stack posted in March @contemporaryfiction and @katrin.loves.books will donate $1/€1 to the @colorectalcanceralliance and @deutschekrebshilfe respectively. Thank you to them for spreading awareness for very personal reasons of their own. Make sure you check out their posts and if you post a stack, use the hashtag #bookstackforcoloncancer Have a lovely weekend everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #booksforcharity #mapsofourspectacularbodies #maddiemortimer #maggieofarrellhamnet #thebedlamstacks #natashapulley #carimora #thomasharrisbooks #stephenkingfangirl😍📚 #billysummers #thechangeling #victorlavalle #bowelcancerawarenessmonth #screeningsaveslives #darkbluebookstack https://www.instagram.com/p/CpYTbNZr6eH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Hello everyone and happy World Book Day! I’ve taken a quick snap of my little reading room to celebrate books and all the joy they’ve brought me. I became a reader at a very early age and one of my favourite things about it is that I share the obsession with my little sister @chrissireads She is one of the very few people who I can be myself with when in her company - all the weird bits included and she goes out of her way to help me, check on me or cheer me up when I’m struggling either physically or mentally. We are going on a little trip to Bath at the beginning of April and I can’t wait. We’ll be visiting our favourite bookshop @mrbsemporium OF COURSE and I also can’t wait to explore @toppingsbath As if one bookish holiday wasn’t enough 😂 we’re also going away for a week to our favourite place to visit together, Malta 🇲🇹 We always have a relaxing time, stay in the same hotel and get loads of books read! I’m so lucky that Chrissi is my sister and she loves books just as much as I do. We can spend a whole day/evening together just reading with breaks to update each other on how our books are going. We also set each other funny little challenges in the form of voice notes for how many pages we should read in that day. Do you have a bookish soulmate? I’d love to know! Let’s have a chat in the comments. Thank you Chrissi for being the best sister in the world and for being my bookish soulmate. I’ll always treasure our relationship and I’ve got your back anytime you need me. Thank you for having mine. 🥰 Happy World 🌎📚 day! #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #myreadingnook📕☕️💕 #myreadinglifeathome #booksfordayssss #toomanybooksnotenoughshelves #mychaoticlittleworld #mybookcollection❤️ #mysisteristhegreatest #bookishsoulmate https://www.instagram.com/p/CpTBawSLFOe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
