drew my latest obsession! we have atlantic (or gulf, as they both visually look the same), white and beluga! i signed it at the bottom this time ‘cause i’m actually super proud of them (especially the white and beluga)! :3
To go along with the sturgeon post I just reblogged where I talked about my time with my state’s DEP. That’s me! This was the largest sturgeon I encountered in my time with the state. It’s not the best angle but this dude was well over 7 feet long! Unfortunately it had washed up dead along a river bank. It was my job when a call came in about a dead sturgeon to go and either bring it back to the field station for measurements and to collect samples, or if it was too big to fit in the bed of our truck (like this one), to take measurements and samples on site then bury it there. Let me tell you guys, the smell of a decomposing sturgeon is the single WORST SMELL I have ever smelled. I’ve handled various marine life, both alive and dead, and nothing compares to dead sturgeon. I have never gotten nauseous or sick from a smell until one particular sturgeon who was pretty deep into decomp. It was bad.
Atlantic sturgeon in the king's pantry -- unique discovery in Baltic shipwreck from 1495
I find these well-preserved shipwrecks unbelievably cool. Like looking into the past, without any distortion from the present.
I thought it would be fun to draw some fish I like in proper scale to one another. You never really put two and two together about the absolute sizes of some animals until you see them compared to other things! I’ve already done four off the top of my head: An Atlantic sturgeon that’s 3 meters long (modern Atlantic sturgeons rarely reach sizes over 2.4 m, but historically they could be up to 4 meters. I settled on an in between length), a northern pike that’s 120 cm long (upper estimate), a Siberian sturgeon that’s 2 meters long (absolute max size), and a neon tetra that’s 3 cm long (average length)! If you need help seeing the neon tetra, here’s it is with the Atlantic sturgeon:

Award-winning photo captures historic return of Atlantic sturgeon | Rewilding Europe Spanish photographer Jon A. Juárez has scooped this year’s Rewilding Europe Award , which celebrates some of the most striking rewilding-related imagery from across the continent. His winning photo, depicting the groundbreaking release of an Atlantic sturgeon in Sweden, illustrates the power of rewilding to breathe new life into landscapes and seascapes. The German Society for Nature Photography (GDT) has announced the winner of this year’s Rewilding Europe Award, as part of the prestigious European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The award attracted outstanding submissions from across the continent, with winning and commended images showcasing rewilding stories spanning rivers in Sweden and wetlands in Romania to beavers in the Netherlands and wolves in Germany. The stunning winning entry — captured by Spanish photographer Jon A. Juárez and titled “ Comeback of the Atlantic Sturgeon ” — depicts the release of a juvenile Atlantic sturgeon in Sweden’s Göta River in 2024, as part of a first batch of 100 fish. This pioneering rewilding initiative, which is being coordinated by the Swedish Anglers Association (Sportfiskarna), offers new hope for the recovery of the species in Europe.
Now, I usually dont make art for holidays but ive had this idea for a while and i thought what the hell, might as well get it out for easter There’s this island in the Baltic sea called Blå jungfrun (Blue maiden) that in folklore was told to be bald mountain, hosting witch congregations. I read somewhere that witches were told to sometimes fly in on sturgeons and i don’t remember where i read that, so it might not be accurate, but i thought what the hell, sturgeons are cool so i’ll paint one anyway (plus, we recently had sturgeons returned to our waters after a century of them being nationally extinct, so that’s cool)
