Texas whiskey is bold, diverse, evolving, and increasingly impossible to ignore. I take a look at the 2026 Texas Whiskey Festival’s must-try bottles, from Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon and Andalusia Whiskey Co. Cigar Malt to Koopers Family Barrel Reserve Rye, and Austin 121. I also give a well-deserved shout-out to the runner-ups, because once you get into whiskey this good, “best” becomes more complicated. Different mash bills, proofs, finishes, climates, and house styles all shape the glass. At some point, judging is partly about palate, preference, and what resonates in the moment. The Glenmorangie Harrison Ford Limited Edition is an exclusive Highland single malt release, created in collaboration between the famous Hollywood actor Harrison Ford and Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr. Bill Lumsden. The partnership came about as part of the tongue-in-cheek advertising campaign ‘Once Upon a Time in Scotland’. Harrison Ford wanted a whisky that retained the elegant, fruity essence of Glenmorangie but offered significantly more edge, character and depth – or as he himself put it: “a bit more bite”. The blend of mature, older Glenmorangie stocks and the robust red wine cask finish gives the dram a very special dynamism. True to his minimalist nature, Harrison Ford gave his official, straightforward verdict after the tasting: “It’s nice. It’s very nice.” Cask maturation: Classic ex-bourbon casks + finish in heavily toasted Portuguese red wine casks Alcohol content: 46.5% ABV (non-chill-filtered)
Signatory Vintage Whisky Cask Strength Collection – Glenrothes 30 y.o. When an independent bottler such as Signatory Vintage allows a cask from the Speyside distillery Glenrothes to mature for a full 30 years and then releases it as part of its renowned Cask Strength Collection (often in the exclusive sub-range Symington’s Choice), we are talking about an absolute premium whisky. A prime example is the current bottling from 1995. Typically, the natural cask strength after 30 years is still a robust 51% to 55% ABV. This ensures an exceptionally intense mouthfeel. A whisky of this calibre needs time in the glass. After pouring, allow it to breathe for a few minutes. Facts & Figures: Region: Speyside ABV: 54.6% Cask Type: First Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt Cask Number: 6979 Bottled: 02/02/2026 Limitation: 487 bottles

Whiskey lovers, serious spirits drinkers, distillers, judges, educators, collectors, and all who wish to learn better evaluation techniques are invited to meet George F. Manska at Bar Convent Brooklyn on June 10, 2026, from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. For a signing of Distilled Spirits Sensory Science: A Systematic Approach to Flavor Evaluation and Analysis. Moving beyond tradition, tasting-room folklore and myth, inadequate flavor descriptions, and brand storytelling, this text teaches spirits evaluation through applicable sensory science, presenting structured methods for nosing, tasting, interpreting, and judging spirits with greater consistency and evidence-based discipline. It explains why ethanol suppresses aroma, why nosing technique matters, how glass shape and bias affect perception, and why added water can both reveal and distort. Meet the author, get your personalized copy of the first book ever published to directly connect factual science with deeper appreciation and accurate evaluation of spirits.
