Wow this latest chapter of your fic was the best!!! Can you share a little about your choices for the story? I’m so curious how you decided on this characterization for Red Son (which I love) Also what made you choose for him to go to a Mei first rather than MK? How is his dynamic with MK going to be different than the one with Mei? I love your story so much and I’m dying for more info about it! ( ˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶) ~❤︎
Hoooooo boy, oh thank you, friend! I’m so glad you liked it!! And I am more than happy to yap about the trio and the fic, omg ^-^ So the very first initial concept that kicked it off was basically just the events that happen in All’s Fair, and I expanded from there. I love the idea of the two noodlebrains plotting and scheming and wooing our boy, but it can’t be so simple with him. Red Son is literally my favorite character that exists anywhere. It wasn’t so much a decision on how to characterize him as it was just basing everything on what we see in lmk and the context clues we get for what’s happening inside his head. In my mind, based on what’s canon, the specific issues that he has in TL&T are just the best explanation for how he acts in the show. There’s one scene in Claim to Flame that really suggests that I’m right. It’s when Mei charges out to beat up the flame sprite and RS grabs her and pulls her back. He’s like, “This is why we don’t hang out.” and Mei looks at him with just the most devious little face, laughs, and says, “Yeah, that’s the reason.” The layers here are delicious. 1. They don’t hang out, but Mei has most certainly offered (why else would he bring it up?), so Red must have turned her down about it. 2. He’s saying the way she doesn’t listen/rushes impulsively into things is why they don’t hang out, which is clearly not true, at least not in the way he’s saying it. Like it could be a half truth, in the “you stress me out because I care about you and you’re always so fucking reckless” way. But that’s not how he says it. His tone is saying “you don’t listen and that’s stressful, so that is the reason we don’t hang out.” On some level, he’s lying to her (and most likely himself) about it. 3. Mei implies that there is an entirely different reason. And with the face she’s making, the best conclusion is that she knows how he feels about her. And a small degree of how repressed he is about it. If it was literally anything else, I feel like her expression would be much saltier, or at least less smug and knowing. Because clearly she likes spending time with him. So yeah, I’m sticking as close to canon as possible, basing everything I can on it. There is certainly tons of interpretation involved, but I haven’t taken any major logical leaps. It’s all been step by step exploration. As far as the choice to go to Mei rather than MK, I feel like it was the natural progression. She has always been way more physical with him than anyone else is (canon). And I continued that trend throughout the fic. Contact with her is more familiar territory, an easier leap for him to make. And then leading directly into your next question, there is the small matter of the difference in the dynamics. Mei is the safer choice for him. I talked a bit about it in Get Sprung, and there’s about to be like a chapter and a half on this upcoming, but the response Red has to MK is extremely different. With Mei, he can take over the situation pretty easily. In canon, he’d been the one to give her fire lessons, so he already has some level of comfort with authority over her. That is not the case with MK, and there is a level of discomfort that persists even when they are solidly allies, at the very end of the show. He gets nervous (visibly sweating and looking around for MK with an emotionally defensive pose) when asking Mei if the noodle boy was involved in the reality cracks in Claim to Flame. Like just look at the sequence of expressions here. Big stress, concern, and relief. He’s grumpy in this moment, but if you look past that layer it’s pretty obvious how he feels. And later when Mei teases him a little with the “see newdle boy, save the world” bit, he immediately goes on the defensive and focuses only on the second part of what she said. “Oh, so this time I’m invited to stop the apocalypse?” Now, that all has a very simple explanation, imo. But the rest is, unfortunately, gonna have to be a RAFO. The pieces are all there if you care to put them together, especially since TLoaD is out now. :D And I wish I could talk about the dynamic with the three of them all together without spoilers, because it’s also different than just the two and two. Lots of fun. I can certainly do a little write up for the trio dynamic once I drop that chapter. >:D

That would be ridiculous.” When you minimize your own lived experiences because you’ve lived them your entire life.

Sneaking away to a hidden corner to share a secretive kiss “We only have a few minutes.” “A few minutes is fine,” Qi Xiaotian sat in the windowsill, unabashedly looking the prince up and down. “You look fantastic.” “Of course,” Red Son huffed, crossing his arms. “You think the Demon Bull prince would dare look shabby during his birthday celebrations?” “Absolutely not, I would never dare!” Xiaotian laughed as he pulled out a small box. “Speaking of birthdays, I have something for you.” “I would hope so,” Red accepted the box. It was small, wrapped in cheap red wrapping paper. If he placed it amongst the table full of gifts, most gigantic and finely wrapped, it would disappear, probably into the void. He liked this one better. “What is it?” “Open it.” Red Son sighed but began to tear at the paper. His mind went over the possibilities as he opened it. It was small, fitting into Xiaotian’s smaller hand, so it couldn’t be anything bigger than maybe a key chain. Maybe a chain? Or a gift card? Maybe… He opened it to reveal… “A square.” “Pull it out!” Red, raising a brow, grabbed the square. The motion revealed it was made of fabric, finer than anything he felt before, and unfolded, revealing it to be… a cloak? At the very top, a golden hair gleamed. “What…” He touched it. In an instant, the room lit up with gold. Light and shadow combined, creating the image of a spectral golden monkey, a small dragon stretched across its shoulders, who beamed and bowed at Red before disappearing. “Wha- What was that?” “Monkey King taught me how to create a guardian spirit!” Xiaotian beamed. “So, in case your family gets attacked, we can get a warning and try to help you!” His smile died. “I don’t want you guys to be alone, not after Azure-” Red couldn’t help it. He leaned forward, sealing his lips over his. It was fast, too fast for his liking, but it hopefully communicated his gratitude. Kisses prompts here!
Hi! i am a huge fan of your dkr au, since i adore one sided romances a lot!! i just wanted to ask, what would happen if red got his"just desserts" in a sense. for example, the way he is obsessed with mk, and the way he treats him. what if red got trapped in a mini pocket dimention run by a god, one who can bend reality, shape it and edit it to how he wants it to be, who is equally obsessed with him, if not a little more. and he's trapped there as a punishment. the whole "Punishment fitting the crime" saying? how would red react? i have so much info on these two, it is insane i think about writing materials way to much. for example, every time red is close to escaping, this god will just erase the exit, something he could do all along, but he loves seeing red struggle and thinks of it as a "cat and mouse" game of sorts. but yeah! i just wanted to ask since i would adore to draw the concept (and if i post it i will ofc tag you, and if I write more info on my page, i'll tag you as well!) and write some of it, i just want to make sure i got red's reaction down to a key!! again, big fan!! i love what you do keep it up!

I have a lot of fun with my Demon King Red AU and making Red suffer is basically the cornerstone of it, so yeah the thing you’re describing here totally fits the motif of it 😂 As for his reaction, I feel like if DKR was trapped in a world where he was being tormented by a deity that wouldn’t let him escape, he would only draw further into the madness that has already consumed him. He is obsessed with MK, so his every waking thought is of his darling MK and how he can get back to him. He’s trying desperately to escape, not because he himself is miserable, but because oh no, his precious and wonderful MK must be so worried about him. He has to get back! He has to find MK! It’s not for himself, it’s for MK’s sake! At first he would fight and kick and scream and try to resist as much as he could- after all, he won’t ever love anyone except for MK, and some interdimensional monster that is trying to win him over has absolutely no chance against someone as perfect as his Darling. When it’s more apparent that his violent resistance won’t get him anywhere, he starts to break down. The misery and the sadness start to win over the anger. He starts to beg. Please. Please let him go back! He has to get back to his darling MK. He must be so miserable without Red around! Anyway, this is pretty fun and is a fitting punishment considering what he does to MK in the Prince MK bad ending haha
Imagine the idea of Red Son’s true form being really inhuman/a lot more like his father and MK REALLLY wants to see it but Red Son uses the excuse of no clothes fitting his true form and not being prepared to be naked AND is his true form to get away with not showing it to MK. To make Red Son the most comfortable when at some point in their relationship he decides it’s time he faces his true form despite hating it, MK makes his bed EXTRA fluffy and even put away his (or most of his) Monkie King stuff- unintentionally making his room look like he is going to courtnap Red Son lmao But also Red Son body dysmorphia coz I EAT THAT UP
Ya’ll, I gotta admit here, I have always been kinda itching to do something about how changing sizes between forms ought to fuck up their clothes.. I mean, it’s magic so I totally understand the impulse to be like ‘nooo his clothes would just change with him so it’s fine~’ because if the boy uses magic to change back and forth, why wouldn’t he also magically alter his clothes??? But. 👀 It’s all make believe, right? Why not play pretend a little more? Anyway, I love the idea of MK wanting to bad to see Red Son’s true form that he actually decides to take this big step in accepting his own monkey form in order to get his demon crush to open up to him! Also, let’s be super duper for real, if MK heard from Red Son that he would be naked in his true form if he showed MK and MK wanted to make him feel less embarrassed about that by being in his monkey form, for suuuuuure that boy would be fully naked 😂 Red Son climbs into MK’s window expecting a chill, casual hangout and MK is splayed out on a nest he clearly made himself all like: …but yeah. Red Son might be flustered at first but I see no outcome where he doesn’t totally fall into MK’s trap and goes with it.

MK in Mercury Retrograde Caution: spoilers for Mercury Retrograde and Equal Ground below the cut. [ AO3 ] Okay, so, about MK’s little freak out in Mercury Retrograde. First of all, from the very beginning, MK has a very anxious attachment style. He’s terrified of being alone; we see it time and time again throughout the show. He worries that everyone he loves will see him as this monster because of his monkey form. He is afraid that they’ll leave him, or (worse) fight him. (we know this from season 4) Even by the end of season five, MK has not really accepted the monkey form as a part of him, at least not in any casual setting. We never see him just hanging out with friends or family in it. He only uses it when he absolutely has to in big fights, and every time he reverts back as soon as he can. And now, in TL&T, those relationship issues are cranked to 11 because this is a new relationship. With Mei and Pigsy and Tang, he’s known them like his entire life, and he is still worried about it. There’s no way he’d be more secure with Red Son, especially not in these early days where everything is scary and delicate and new. Even before they were together, in Would You Rather, MK tells Red Son, “I’m not just a pretty face,” and the subtext is “Please please please see who I am, not just what I look like.” He makes it seem like a joke, but it’s coming from a real fear. In Blind Spot, he thinks he’s come out to Red Son about the monkey form, though he was too scared to actually say it, and Red Son’s like ‘yeah okay, nbd.’ So MK thinks that that particular terror of his is at least addressed. Red didn’t run screaming for the hills, and then actually entered into a relationship with him, so he thinks he’s in the clear for that aspect. But then in Get Sprung, Red Son freaks out after spinning him in the water one (1) time, and seems to have a much less negative reaction to interacting with Mei. Which is true , but MK doesn’t understand the reason for it yet, so he assumes the worst. He thinks it’s because Red Son doesn’t want him as much, or is scared of him, or both. And then they didn’t see too much of each other for a couple of days, followed by an ominous “we need to talk” phone call. MK genuinely thought Red Son was about to break up with him, because what else could that be about? And Red Son is autistic af, so he doesn’t do the normie thing of, “Oh I’d never break up you, don’t worry about it!” He’s just like ‘why would I take you somewhere else after? Idiot [affectionate]’. All that is like barely a week prior to Mercury Retrograde. And while Red Son is off trauma bonding with Sandy, Mei tells MK about every possible detail of the incredible dicking down she got the night before. He’s glad to have the information; it’s useful, but it also makes him kinda jealous. Another thing to remember here is that this is a first time poly relationship. Mei and MK have never had to share like this before, so he wasn’t really prepared for how hearing about all that would make him feel. Previous tales of sexual encounters they shared with each other were just bestie talk; this is something else entirely. That night, Red Son doesn’t really want to spend the night with him. He wants to, but he doesn’t want to at the same time, which is not a good feeling to be on the receiving end of. And MK has to physically —carefully, gently, but still physically!— pull him into the room. Now, MK is expecting to have to come out as trans if they do get intimate. That shit’s stressful, so he’s already keyed up about it. This was already a make or break moment for him, and then he finds out the Red Son had no idea about the monkey form. So those two fears join forces and he’s starting to properly feel like this is all about to come to a sudden but inevitable end. And then the icing on the cake, the moment where things really jump the rails: Red Son tells him it’s harder for him to be with MK than Mei, because he is “more dangerous than she is.” There was no chance he was going to take this as meaning anything other than the literal danger lurking inside him at all times, even though they had been using “dangerous” as a euphemism for “hot, powerful, and irresistible” prior to this. For MK, this is 2 + 2 = “I really am going to lose everyone because of this thing that I didn’t even want, that I had no choice about, starting with Red Son.” It’s his worst nightmare, a thing he’d pushed away and tried so hard not to think about for long enough that he’d fooled himself into believing that he was past it, and it was suddenly made real in that moment. So, iternally, he’s like, “That’s it. Time to scare him off and be done with it.” He goes monkey mode and does his little rant, the whole, “I am dangerous.” bit. And there is the the unspoken part of, “And if that’s a problem for you, then we need to call it quits right now, before this gets any worse. Before I fall even more more in love with you.” And, of course, Red Son had no idea about any of those particular fears prior to this, so it kinda came out of left field for him. From his perspective, it’s obvious how he feels. But in the reality of the situation, it’s very much not obvious, because MK has all of this other worry that’s completely clouding his judgement about it. When he finally steps out of the doom spiral for two seconds, he understands exactly what Red Son is trying to communicate. But yeah, I just wanted to provide that additional context, in case anybody missed it. It had all been hinted at, but I got a lot going on in the fic lol

Well since tumblr's not going to make itself utterly unusable, what if Yandere MK but with lotusnoodles? Idk maybe Red and Mei have dodged and denounced him enough times that theyre starting to be not worth the effort or smth and that's around when nezha shows up, whom has only seen pre-mask off MK and has no reason to distrust the fact that he's suddenly beng wooed and told of the horrible injustice of his terrible ex turning his own best friend against him to date her instead-! Of all the nerve!
Haha I mean, Yandere MK is a pretty bad guy, so I could see him meeting Nezha and trying to use him for his own schemes… only to kind of grow to like the celestial prince as well. And why stop at just lotusnoodles? Why shouldn’t he get to have two princes who love and worship him and do everything he says??

“Red?” No. “Red, it’s okay.” No. No, it wasn’t. “Red,” Cold hands, ones he had tried to warm dozens of times before, held his. There was no pause, not even a hint of fear at the stake he held. “Red, breathe. You’re okay.” Red Son shook his head. No, he wasn’t. There was a body on the floor, two little marks on the neck bleeding out far more than they should have been. The smell of iron and copper hung thick in the air, warning of the evil that lived in these halls. Blood was splattered across his- Across Qi Xiaotian’s form. “There we are,” his Noodle Boy said, smiling like the sun. His eyes gleamed red. “I was worried.” He wasn’t supposed to be like this. Red Son had grown up in a noble family, with a long line of noble blood. Of course, the public only knew about their glorious history of battle and trade. In secret, they had a noble cause. A plague, coming from the West, brought by the Silk Road many years ago, infected people. It was no ordinary sickness. No, it was vampirism. When a victim was bit and drained of blood and then fed, they rose up from the dead to hunt the living. Red’s family had sworn a solemn oath to defend their lands from the undead. Red had sworn that oath. Qi Xiaotian was supposed to be separate from that world, that life. He had met him one night after a rough hunt. Red had collapsed next to a small inn and had barely realized someone saw him before gentle, callused hands had guided him to eat and drink a bowl of delicious, fragrant noodles. Qi Xiaotian had saved him. Any vampire would have quickly killed him. He had fed him and brought him inside to rest. He had allowed Red to not pay him- at least, for that night. The next time, Red Son insisted on paying him. Again. And again. And again. And he started coming, just to see him. Just to see his smile, his wit, his kind heart. …was it… “How long did you know?” “For a while,” Xiaotian admitted. “I was tempted to kill you when I discovered you outside Pigsy’s door. But, your parents would have tracked Pigsy and Tang down for that.” His eyes hardened. “And I couldn’t let that happen.” That was it. “…I… why not afterward?” “Because,” Xiaotian sighed, pulling one hand to cup his face. “I love you. You’re perfect for me, Red. Perfect for what I need.” “What-?” Xiaotian lunged forward.
