Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus |02| Upwards Climb Now that we have the ability to dash, it’s time to head back up to where we couldn’t cross before. Mind you, I do try to collect what I can along the way. And then an ultimate goal set forth for the little rabbit. Yes, I’m apparently playing a rabbit. I kinda thought I was a fox, too. #bopathoftheteallotus #metroidvania #indiegame
Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus |01| This Seems a Little Familiar A game that has been on my wishlist for a bit but had to grab while it was on Humble Bundle for cheap, I kinda forgot it existed! But hey, maybe this is a bit of an unknown gem of a Metroidvania game with a Japanese Mythology aesthetic to it? #bopathoftheteallotus #metroidvania #indiegame

Devlog 1 – Down the rabbit hole Welcome to the first official devlog for The Ash Black Cat and the Pumpkin Knight ! It’ll be a little long because it’s the first one and because I’m trying to sound professional. (?!) This game is the second chapter of my The Ash Black Cat saga. A few months after Every Thought Flies , one day in late October, this is what happens. Felix, who was busy with his fantastic part-time job at the graveyard, suddenly finds himself locked in. Which is very strange, considering he has the keys. Oh, my bad, they’re gone too. Trying to catch a mischievous cat that’s running away with his belongings, he ends up finding a bottomless pit… Work on this game (officially) began in late February 2026, and I’m developing it on RPG Maker MZ. Useful background information before reading: this game is halfway between horror and dark fantasy. It will revisit some scenes from the demo/prototype The ash black cat and the happy ogre (but extensively revised for the occasion) and then become something completely different. The story/game will unfold across nine different areas (an initial area, a sort of antechamber, and seven actual levels). As usual when it comes to me, I love to write, so the dialogues and cutscenes will be long ! It’s not a visual novel yet, but it’s close. (Still, there are plenty of puzzles and things to do. I tried to keep a good balance between the parts.) The protagonists are Felix, Noelia and a new character I’ll introduce here. Abele and Gioele are mentioned occasionally, however. The graveyard where everything began (still need to find a name) Story I’d say this part is almost complete! The story is already largely decided. I have two very long and detailed files about the lore, summaries of each area, and all the parts I want to emphasize. For example, not only is the ending planned right now, but also the post-credits scene and the bonus room. We’re actually in the writing phase. The first area is complete, and I’ve already written some of the later scenes (the key moments, so to speak). It’s taking me a little longer than usual because I’m writing as I create the game, rather than waiting until it’s finished and writing everything at once. I don’t know, since it’s a bit longer and more detailed than Every Thought Flies , I’m more comfortable this way. (It helps me follow the story’s pacing.) There’s only one thing up in the air for now: should I add multiple endings? The true ending is pretty much settled, but I’m still unsure whether to add bad endings and a normal ending. I usually only add them if I feel like there’s an opportunity and if they give me a chance to delve deeper into certain parts of the story. I also want bad endings to be useful to the player in some way, so that accidentally stumbling upon them isn’t too frustrating. (And also because I don’t like adding things just for the sake of it.) For now, it doesn’t seem like there’s a real possibility, but… Maps The first tree areas are complete, I have the tilesets ready for the next two, and I had already made some maps that will be used in the final part. Especially the first area (the initial graveyard) is currently at a final release level of polish and detail. The second area (an underground river) is almost there. I’m just a little hesitant about the fourth area: I have a certain plan in mind (open rooms supported by columns, mirrors, crystals, reflective floors, etc.), but I’m not sure if I can replicate that vibe. I’ll definitely try. (And I’ll be pissed if I don’t succeed and have to change the plan, lol.) [HELLO HOW ARE YOU I know you don’t want to celebrate, but it’s your 18° birthday and the thought that you are spending it at work makes me sad! Everything’s fi ne, I hope? ] Gameplay The first three areas are perfectly playable! Right now, it takes me about 20 minutes to play through the entire game. Which is worrying, since I know what I’m supposed to do by heart. I think it’s already 40 or 50 minutes of gameplay total. (It’s going to be a biiit long…) If you’re wondering, the gameplay is similar to Noelia’s and Abele’s chapters in Every Thought Flies , but I want to give each area a slightly different feel, so some might be a little weirder. Since I wanted to overdo this time, I’m also adding some tiny Easter eggs and achievements (no more than two per area). Currently, I’ve started working on the gameplay for the fourth area, the glass palace. Actually, pretty much all the areas are planned; there’s just one (the sixth?) where I want to do a certain thing, but I’m not exactly sure how to get there with the gameplay. Let’s say I’d like to create a kind of lupus in fabula . General graphics Uh… the sore part… In theory, the situation isn’t that bad: I made the title screen and a customized menu (which I’m absolutely happy with, it’s so cozy. It should appeal to autumn fans. You know, those who start celebrating Halloween in July…). We have the sprites of Felix and Noelia (the same one they had in the demo of The Ash Black Cat and the Happy Ogre , but we’ve updated them a bit. And I’m not speaking in the royal plural, my friend makes the sprites. x°). The third character, Pumpkin, is a work in progress for now (but it’s turning out adorable). The only problem is that I’ve decided that later in the game Felix will have a change of clothes, so we need to make another sprite for him as well. The talk sprites/busts… the only complete set, at the moment, is Mr. Pumpkin’s. But I can’t show you that because s poiler . Noelia’s one is in progress, and I haven’t even started Feli’s yet. Help. (I mean, I drew it on paper, but it’s not digital yet.) I have some CGs in mind, but I haven’t done any. In this devlog, I want to be completely honest. I love drawing, but for now, coloring digitally is a lovely pain in the ass. I’ll try to speed up my process in the future. Not 100% sure about the logo, but I like how the title screen turned out! (And the lantern swings!) Music and sound effects Choosing the music is one of my favorite parts! So I already have my fair share of songs for this game. It was a bit difficult to find one I liked for the title screen, but it finally appeared. I also recovered some of my favorite songs from the original demo, but I used them a little differently. I hope it will be a pleasant surprise for those who played it back then. For now, I can’t afford to commission original soundtracks from a musician, so you’ll find free-to-use songs in this game. But I can assure you that they’ve all been chosen with the utmost care and, hopefully, they’re not soundtracks you’ve already heard in other RPGs. (Just for the record: these are all songs written by real people and have been on the internet or my PC since before 2023, so I’m sure of their origins. I’ve always been a serial hoarder of useful materials.) In the future, I’d like to have at least the original title screen, though! Random stuff I still have to find an achievement plugin that I’m happy with. Also unsure whether to include a CG gallery. I always think it’s nice when there’s one, but maybe it’d be a bit excessive here. Last things The game will be free. Since I’m doing it on MZ this time, in addition to the Windows version, the browser, Mac, and Linux versions will also be available right away. ^^ Once released, I’d like to make a databook or something similar, but we’ll talk about that later! (I’ll definitely make one for Every Thought Flies in the future, though). You can also follow me on bluesky for more random updates! The next devlogs will be a little more casual and scattered, I think, since they’ll present the progress of the work as it happens. See you next time! PS: Despite the evocative title of the post, Abele is actually the character associated with Alice in Wonderland (and I might make a game about that in the future). The scene of Felix and Noelia falling down the pit is, in all honesty, more inspired by Bad End Night ! ^^ (I’m talking specifically about Ever Lasting Night ). PPS: if you liked the school setting from The ash black cat and happy ogre , worry not! I have planned another game for the future (“planned”, well, it’s half ready… cough) where we are going back to explore the school. But with a new story and a couple of new characters.
