Slimy-looking plants clustered like flies where water seeped through the rock face. Six-legged animals crawled over the terraces. Their legs looked awkwardly thin at the hips, but they flared out below the knees into cone-shaped feet as wide as Arza’s arms were long. They stood straight up where the surface was horizontal and stuck out parallel to the ground where it was vertical, and they ambled over the ninety-degree angles in between like they saw no difference. One or two people rode each animal. All of them sat right-side up, with their feet down towards the ground and their heads up towards the sky. Arza narrowed her eyes at the animal hanging off the cliff face closest to her. The animal shifted its weight, and its rider’s saddle rolled against the motion. Sunlight gleamed on the pair of rails encircling the animal’s thorax. A counterweight swung gently from the rails directly below the rider. Arza smiled quietly.
