NASA Deploys Sail of Experimental Spacecraft Propelled Purely by Light Those of you following the Advanced Composite Solar Sail System may have heard that its booms and sail are now deployed. It is receiving light pressure from the Sun to propel it through the Solar System. Like a test pilot in a new aircraft, NASA are now testing out just how it handles. Before deployment, the spacecraft was slowly tumbling and now the controllers will see if they can get it under control and under sail power. The reflectivity of the sail means it’s an easy spot in the night sky, just fire up the NASA app to find out where to look. Continue Reading.
Even with a bunch of more realistic space movies like The Martian and Interstellar , the list of realistic interplanetary spaceships in movies still kind of only has two entries, Discovery-1 from 2001: A Spacy Odyssey , and Venture Star from Avatar . With the caveat that the more realistic version of Discovery was the concept art version with the radiators.
I’m like trying to pin this idea down The concept is a sail surfing that also uses a combo of magic and pneumatics to self propel itself without the need for wind or for the waves. The gear at the bottom is partially for stability, like the extended keel of those racing sailing ships. It’s kinda a combo of real life windsurfing and the solar sail from treasure planet. It can’t fly on its own propulsion and still requires to be connected to the water like with windsurfing, but still has the speed and control of the solar sail.
Electromagnets? I was reminded of a comment I made about a magic wand (electromagnetic wand) that the astronauts would use before transferring into the Lunar Hotel. @frasercain tells us about a magic shield that repels Moon Dust. Astronauts won’t need a magic wand with a magic shield for their solar panels. I hope you realize that the astronauts we are talking about are the robotic rovers we are using today. Tiny spacecraft could travel across interstellar space with this ‘trampoline’ lightsail Scientists at the California Institute of Technology have taken a major step toward developing lightsails that could one day carry tiny spacecraft to distant star systems. The new findings detail a method to measure the force of laser light on what are known as “ultrathin membranes.” This is research that could help advance the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative’s vision of laser-driven space travel. NASA’s Solar Sail Mission Is Finally Flying After Deployment Glitch « Solar sails harness energy produced by light from the Sun, using it to propel spacecraft forward. As the photons hit the spacecraft’s sails, it causes small bursts of momentum that propel it farther away from the star. We’ll be watching closely as this tiny cubesat, and this interesting new concept, takes its important first baby steps in space. »
Jeau’s Daily Post #2 Right, day two and i’m still doing this! That’s a decent sign, I haven’t given up on this yet. Today’s topic, solar sails. They’re so cool! They’re a system for spaceships to propel themselves, using the radiation from stars. Infinite energy! This is a real thing that we have done! It’s got a slower acceleration, but faster overall speed than traditional rockets. If you want an example, just search up IKAROS. This is one of the few ways we could achieve interstellad travel, and people aren’t talking about it enough!
Oumuamua and Space Spiders? Space Spiders made the Solar Sails… I thought I should share this YouTube video about Oumuamua that passed by Earth in 2017. If you didn’t hear about Oumuamua until years later? It took years of Astronomers looking through Telescope recordings to find it in the infinity of space. This video reports on the papers that I hadn’t read but commented about the idea of solar sales being responsible for the changes in speeds of… View On WordPress
