September 11, 2016 SMILE SOUTH CENTRAL LeBA “Unafraid to speak his mind with a spray can” The Site Unseen says “LeBA is recognized and admired for combining biting social commentary and fine art imagery into his street art… . his work is always relevant, exploratory, skillfully crafted, and many times, politically charged.” While he has a wide-ranging set of skills and experience including sculpture, wheat-paste, and stencil work LeBA says he “is known best as a street artist, muralist, and oil painter” and he considers his signature style “realistic oil portraits of political and social satire along with themes of mortality and the afterlife.” It’s not surprising that LeBA was drawn to Adam Ayala’s Smile South Central project, using art to help South Central Los Angeles residents transform their community. July 30, 2016 SMILE SOUTH CENTRAL Septerhed Septerhed was painting on Melrose Avenue when Smile South Central organizer Adam Ayala approached him about becoming one of the projects first artists. For a street artist always in search of wall space he jumped at the opportunity. Septerhed told Hyperallergic.com it took a few days for the locals to notice, but when they started to compliment him on his work he ended up painting multiple walls. “You can paint in Melrose …” he went on to say “but there’s something special about South Central.” In a neighborhood that was no stranger to graffiti and tagging creating a constant battle and expense for business owners, the murals of Smile South Central have transformed the perception of public art and for the most part have remained untagged, leading Ayala to say that he’s now getting requests for art from building owners all around the area. These charming birds (my wife’s favorite work in South Central) done by Septerhed in 2014, are on 47th St. near Western in South Central Los Angeles. @septerhed @smilesouthcentral @hyperallergic
