Rare Shark Sighting A rare encounter with a great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea has been documented by divers 🦈🌊. The footage, which is the first ever recorded of a great white shark in its Mediterranean Sea habitat, shows a huge adult male specimen. This latest encounter can be interpreted as an encouraging sign for marine biodiversity and a reminder of the importance of continuing and strengthening conservation efforts. What do you think is the most important step to protect these critically endangered species? Read More

Fear can spark hatred as well as irrational thought and action. Respect for an animal’s capabilities and an understanding of its attributes encourages caution and a greater awareness of the animal we are in proximity with. Sharks are not puppies and should not be referred to as thus, nor are they merciless, man-eating predators. They are simply wild animals, living in their natural habitat, and operating as the important ecosystem maintaining, apex predators that they are. It is important to establish this in order to develop a more respectful and well-informed relationship between sharks and humans.” - @womeninoceanscience #sharks #shark #sharkconservation #sharkdiving #diving #freediving #helpsavesharks #savesharks #underwater #ocean #dive #oceanconservation #hawai #northshoreoahu #oahu #hawaiilife #underwaterphotography #freedive #marineconservation #conservation #girlsthatfreedive #girlswhofreedive https://www.instagram.com/p/CYT5_FarvHo/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Repost from the Totally Awesome Vegan Conservationist at…@oneprotest @download.ins — The next victim the FWC has their eyes set on- Black Tip Sharks After anglers in Florida have voiced their frustrations about sharks eating the fish on their lines, the FWC has mentioned their consideration of an increase in black tip shark bag limits. As it stands, one fisherman may take one black tip a day with no size regulations, or two black tips a day per vessel. But anglers are saying culling the species won’t help! No, they are blaming bulls, sandbars and lemons for eating “their” fish as well. Lemon and sandbar sharks are prohibited from being caught or killed in Florida, but will the FWC change that just to make fishermen happy? We will be keeping a very close eye on this and will keep you all informed as well as let you know of anything we can do if needed. . . . #SaveSharks #SharkConservation #Sharks #Shark #Florida #Ocean #Sea #SharkConservation #OceanConservation #OceanLife #SeaLife #TurnTheTide #MarineConservation #AnimalAdvocacy #OneProtest https://www.instagram.com/p/CUX5B6Sg9Ka/?utm_medium=tumblr

Episode 24 | The Devastating Impact of Shark Fin Soup | Interview with Andrea Richey In this episode of the Think Wildlife Podcast, we explore the alarming consequences of the shark fin trade and the devastating toll it takes on global shark populations. An estimated 100 million sharks are killed every year due to human activities, with a significant portion of this tied to the demand for shark fin soup—a delicacy prevalent in East Asia, especially China.

#Repost from our Totally Awesome Shark Conservationist & Scientist..@drneilhammer @ Video & Post by @drneilhammer — I usually avoid touching wildlife, but here are two of several instances where a lemon shark allowed me to gently stroke its head… Let me explain… I had my mind blown on a recent trip to Tiger Beach, Bahamas, where my longtime friend @jim_abernethy demonstrated to me how lemon sharks, a species that I had known for being very feisty and bitey, would appear to not only tolerate being gently stoked on the head, but seek it out. I say this because sharks normally avoid humans and although the shark was attracted to the area by fish bait, it did not flee when I gently stroked its head, like it would have if I just reached out and tried to touched it or grab a fin. Moreover, after the initial encounter, the same individual shark would repeatedly swim by me and sometimes even lay in front of me, again allowing me to stroke it’s head. The shark was so comfortable with the situation that on several occasions as it circled, I was able to simply place my hand on its head and the shark would then stall and descend to the sea floor, again allowing me to stroke it. What’s really interesting is that these sharks have special mechanoreceptors just under their skin, especially around the head, that are sensitive to touch. I hypothesize that these receptors are stimulated by the rhythmic stroking. It really was mind blowing. While sharks are predators and should be respected as such, they are clearly not mindless killers like they are often made out to be. These animals continue to amaze. . . The white shark is one of the most charismatic top predators. They are protected across many countries. Yet overfishing of its prey has likely related to the decrease from the previously important hotspot.Species-specific protection might not be enough if we don’t protect the preferred habitat and prey species. Join the shark research and conservation volunteer program to make an effort towards making a better future for these predators.
