ALT Remote dive destinations often offer extraordinary marine life encounters, pristine coral reefs, and unforgettable underwater adventures. However, diving far from major infrastructure requires a different level of preparation compared to traditional vacation diving. Emergency planning, equipment redundancy, communication systems, environmental awareness, and travel logistics all become increasingly important when exploring isolated regions. Our latest article, “Remote Diving Locations: Essential Planning and Preparation Tips for Safe Adventures,” provides practical guidance for divers seeking safer and more successful expedition experiences. Whether you’re planning your first remote dive trip or preparing for a more advanced adventure, this guide can help you approach your next expedition with greater confidence. Every diver has seen tanks that look years older than they actually are. Repeated transport, dive boat handling, shore entries, and storage can leave cylinders scratched, dented, and worn. The Scuba Tank Protector helps solve that problem with durable PVC mesh protection that cushions against everyday wear while improving grip and airflow. It’s a simple investment that can help keep dive equipment looking better and performing longer. Heavy-Duty PVC Scuba Tank Protector – Ultimate Dive Cylinder Mesh Protection (6.9
Sending a postcard from the bottom of the ocean Picture this: You’re out SCUBA diving on the bottom of the sea, but in your back pocket (or whatever wetsuits have), you have a letter that you need to get in the mail urgently! What are you to do? Visit an undersea post office, of course! Okay, you may be a bit far away from one, but they exist. And they’re not really serious post offices. Or real post offices beyond touristic interest. But they’re there at least. We’ll start in the Bahamas in 1939 with the very first. Underwater photographer John Ernest Williamson wanted to build a structure that would allow him to stay dry while taking photos of aquatic life. He borrowed a tube design that could be stretched out under a ship and added a chamber at the bottom with a five-foot viewing port. When towed to the Bahamas and suspended from a barge, Williamson got an incredible view at the bottom of the clear ocean up to 250 feet down. This story has plenty more, including the people running the Williamson Photosphere trying to arrange a fight between a shark and a diver so they could film it, but I’m going to focus on the post office. Stamp collecting was a much less dead hobby in 1939, so for publicity, Williamson advertised that you could send your letters through his Photosphere acting as a “Sea Floor Post Office”. It stayed in operation for a couple of years, sending through many letters, each stamped “SEA FLOOR” and “Posted in Williamson Photosphere”. Let’s assume your SCUBA diving isn’t taking place from 1939-1941. Where will your letter go now? You still have plenty of choices, all of them being small post boxes set up on the sea floor to get attention. In Susami Bay, Japan, there’s a post office box mounted in the ocean about 32 feet down. Mail going through it needs to be waterproof and written in indelible ink. You can, luckily, buy postcards like that at nearby shops. Oddly enough, some of them are listed as “flavored and edible”. A similar post box can be found in Vanuatu about ten feet underwater, except the letters are serviced there too! A special inkless cancellation is done on letters going through it. Anyways, you’ll also be able to send your letter in Malaysia (131 feet below sea level) and Norway (an old diving bell repurposed into a post office, and the only modern dry underwater post office).
A diver surfaced after one of the most incredible dives of their life. Sea turtles glided past. A massive school of fish surrounded the reef. Visibility was perfect. But the footage didn’t do the experience justice. After upgrading to the GoPro HERO 12 Black, every dive became an opportunity to create cinematic memories that truly reflected the beauty of the underwater world. With stunning 5.3K video, advanced stabilization, and rugged waterproof performance, it helps transform unforgettable moments into unforgettable content.
