✩ ‧₊˚ ⌞ I X . W H Y A H A ! S A M P O ? ⌝ aha!sampo project m.list ⟡ sampo analysis m.list — what the stars reveal: aha!sampo, analysis, waxing poetic, narrative structure & technique, presenting my argument for why aha!sampo is super cool and fun and sexy, summarizing my project findings, send me to a hyv board meeting the way i’m pitching this development, general discussion of 4. x (no major spoilers) — word count: 1.8k — overview: a personal elaboration on why i like aha!sampo, as well as a high-level overview of what it can offer the story of honkai: star rail. After discussing god consciousness, narrative frameworks, reveals, and more, the question still remains: Why Aha!Sampo? Why do I personally like it? Why do I feel it is a fitting development for the story? And why, exactly, does it work so well? Most of this has already been answered in long-form. Here, however, I plan to bring my thoughts together more cohesively. Why do I personally like Aha!Sampo? To be completely frank, I just think it’s cool . An Aeon, ostensibly an eldritch entity in Their own right, taking form for an extended period of time as a mysterious character we’ve known from the beginning of the story is really interesting. (I am a sucker for characters with massive hidden powers, as well.) As a writer and a reader, I love asking questions. I love grilling the narrative and worldbuilding and coming up with more than I expected to find. Simply put, it’s fun for me. And I’m a nerd. It’s also a hotbed for fanfiction, fanart, and all other kinds of creative craft. There are so many ways to take it—dual-sided, running from debts, trickster gods being unpredictable, simply wanting a nice retirement, and much more. Whatever your flavor of Sampo, you can probably find it here. The trickster nature of Aha!Sampo makes Their motivations flexible, able to be remixed and reinterpreted into new scenes, stories, and conversations. The world is your oyster. Why do I feel Aha!Sampo is a fitting development for the story? As explained previously, both Aha and Sampo have identity-related hooks, alongside mysteries of power, motives, and backstory. Converging the two identities into a reveal is an effective answer to all of these questions at once, enabling the audience to 1) have previous investment in both characters due to their long presence in the overarching story, 2) make connections between past events and reputations, including rumors and word-of-mouth, 3) generate unique insights about both identities separately and together, and 4) feel significant impact to the characters, plot, and world that justifies a lengthy buildup. Aha!Sampo simply has a lot going for it narratively. The potential recontextualization a reveal would create, even if just for the audience, would be on a large scale, and thus effective as far as reveals are concerned. It’s worth addressing the “Who am I right now?” question present in Planarcadia’s teaser trailer (which I take to be asking: Who is Aha right now?) . As of 4.2, as much as I want to manifest Aha!Sampo into reality, the table is still open for many other options. Anyone introduced after the question was posed—mainly new characters in Planarcadia like Nihilux, Evanescia, Yaoguang, Ashveil, and even Asat Pramad—is theoretically on the table. However, I do not believe any one of these is a good contender. I mentioned it previously, but they’ve simply been introduced too close to the reveal itself, if it happens in the Planarcadia arc. The audience hasn’t had enough time to get to know them, and there hasn’t been enough time to properly seed in clues and information for a reveal this large, the reveal of an Aeon. I personally like to think of them as fun set dressing to Aha’s mystery; the red herrings, the characters we know probably aren’t the answer, but the ones Aha drew in to make everything more interesting for us. (Thanks, Aha!) There are also non-character entities, such as Sampo having something to do with Wishpower or Oroboros’ remains or Aha’s tear, or even being the Noblesse Worm that perhaps, somehow, survived. While these are fine extra tidbits to throw in, I do not think they justify a reveal, and the impact would not equal the sheer amount of buildup put into Sampo’s character. Even Sampo as a yet-unnamed Emanator of Elation falls a little flat for me, because there’s little to orient around besides the status of Emanator itself. For all the meticulous detail put into Sampo’s kit and interactions and foreshadowing, the equation of these reveals would be oddly unbalanced, tipping in one direction while leaving the audience with little prior established information on the other. A giant question mark, that doesn’t feel too good to answer via Star Rail’s lengthy exposition dumps. To talk about Emanators a little more, I believe the time for a solely Emanator!Sampo reveal has largely passed. As much as it pains me to say it, Emanator!Sampo just doesn’t carry as much weight as it would have two years or even a year ago. The time for an Emanator!Sampo reveal—a proper, satisfying recontextualization of information that carries impact and meaning—would have been before the characters and audience met more Emanators. An Emanator!Sampo in the days of early Belobog, Xianzhou, or even Penacony would have carried weight; Emanators were still largely mysterious to us then, and Sampo would have been one of the only ones we knew. Now, however, the meaning of the status as the crux of a reveal simply fades. What does an Emanator!Sampo reveal mean if the Trailblazer can count the number of Emanators they’ve met on more than two hands? What does Sampo, coming in at Emanator number 11 or 12 or 13, really mean ? The truth is that it can’t—the main interest would come from how he is an Emanator, or why he is an Emanator, but not the actual reveal of identity itself. This means a reveal wouldn’t really need to happen at all, the information could be integrated in other ways into the story, and Sampo’s identity buildup would sit stagnant with nowhere to funnel into. In my opinion, there wouldn’t be much reason for this to be a reveal, because how would this information really shape things? The Trailblazer would likely go, “Oh. Well I know a bunch of Emanators and they’re cool! You’re good.” and move on. He would just be another Emanator, because he hasn’t been set up with a specific reputation beyond that. It’s great for regular conversation, but not something that justifies identity hooks and foreshadowing and years of buildup. It would be different if we knew of a specific and named Elation Emanator with a reputation—which could be a proper identity to orient around and generate unique insights from—but we simply don’t have that in the game. [To be clear I still very much enjoy Emanator!Sampo in theory, especially in fandom interpretation and fanfic; my main issue is with how it would be executed in canon. I just don’t think it would be most effective development looking at where the story is currently. I worry for the buildup and payoff of a Non-Aha!Sampo reveal on a purely craft level, especially if it occurs in Planarcadia. It sucks to feel that way because in another context, I would’ve loved canon Emanator-or-Other!Sampo. One year ago, two years ago, I actually would have preferred it over Aha!Sampo. Now, I just feel like the window has largely passed. I really don’t see any way they can pull it off in Planarcadia without a huge exposition dump.] And so, we look back to Aha!Sampo. Aha, a vast and mysterious and powerful entity, with a reputation and loads of interesting history. Sampo, a quirky and mysterious character present from the beginning of the game itself. From Sampo’s side, Aha’s Aeonic identity would cause enough commotion to justify a reveal; it would be big news. And from Aha’s side, Sampo serves as a sufficient “surprise present” for the characters and audience—the revelation that They have been with us all along. They complement each other nicely, covering holes that might be present in one or the other. Not to say it’s perfect by any means, but it is the exact right blend of tension, buildup, and payoff that worms its way into my brain and refuses to leave. And because of this, I do believe it is the best route currently available to the game. Why, exactly, does Aha!Sampo work so well? Aha!Sampo achieves its effectiveness through blending a variety of different narrative frameworks and techniques: Emotional tension between expectation and reality, internal and external identity, reputation and action, and the tension between what is revealed, and when, and how, and why. Prompting questions and making connections by directly engaging the audience with new context surrounding established characters, including details present in the buildup. Narrative buildup , threading the seeds and clues of a future reveal through foreshadowing, pre-existing context, microcosmic allusions, and more. Long-term planning , including the intricacy, delicacy, and contextual meaning employed as a result of carefully crafting a story’s details well in advance. The reveal itself, which would synthesize buildup, foreshadowing, and long-term planning to recontextualize significant portions of the plot, characters, history, and worldbuilding of the game, including generating a tangibly large impact for the audience and world of Honkai: Star Rail. Thematic relevance , which would weave Aha and Sampo’s themes and motifs together into a tapestry that makes new and unique connections between the two. The presence of the trickster god archetype, which allows Aha!Sampo to challenge the status quo through unpredictability, loopholes, and narrative/moral flexibility. Aha!Sampo blends all of these techniques wonderfully so far. The reveal itself is the only thing that hasn’t happened yet, but the emotional tension, questions, connections, buildup, planning, thematic relevance, and archetype are all already there. The connective tissue has already been growing, the groundwork has already been laid. All that’s left to do is see if it nails the landing. Ultimately, what this all feels like to me is a beautiful glimpse into the inner workings of a story. I believe that, in a good story, if the reader looks hard enough they should be able to see the beating heart of the whole thing—the nerves and the veins and the pumping blood. Like an intricate watch, you can see the cogs turning. This is what I see in Aha!Sampo. In a strange way, I have looked so deeply I feel I can see the gears turning with every passing second. Perhaps that makes me insane, or perhaps it just means I cared enough to look. I can’t be sure until the game progresses, until more is revealed, but until then, all I know is: It’s beautiful. thanks for reading to the end !! :3 © analysis by sunderingstars. do not copy, repost, translate, modify, or claim my work as your own. do not feed my work to ai.
✨️Yumesona/oc ref✨️ Created because I love Sampo Koski Sharing allowed!! Please talk to me about Sampo and your Yumesonas!! Bless the tumblr format because it means I can infodump with no shame. (Edit: I said before the format f-ed up) Castor is a production assistant and Clock Studios. Low key struggling artist vibe Their game play path (because I like making builds) is Nihility and their element is quantum. I like to think theyre a vunrability to dot debuff unit and heal in accordance to how much damage other units do dot dmg. His lore path is a little closer to Enigmata and Elation. Very absurdist in the sense of “well if it means nothing I will choose to be happy anyways”. Very Engigmata in a “we are not supposed to know everything in the universe because some of that knowledge is too dangerous and better forgotten”. They’re Nonbinary Gay AroAce!! I do about 75% “they” and 25% “he” for him in terms of pronoun preference use. Really liked the idea of Sampo, a person with attachment/avoidant issues around the idea of love and being cared for, letting himself being round about loved and cared for because the person who’s doing it isn’t IN love with him. Still loves just as much. Aka they are barely managing, but are very functional surprisingly despite Castor’s abandonment issues. Very “I find comfort in knowing you find a way to love me that’s unique to us” x “I find comfort in knowing you know I love you as much even if its not the same and its not a DOWNSIDE for you”. Very aro “dating”/in a qpr with someone with more romantic attraction than them. I call my yumeship dovebomb :> Combo of the fact I based Castor off a Luzon Bleeding Heart Dove and I think its a fun/softer play off the concept of lovebombing and Sampo’s literal bomb. Something about a toxic behavior being made genuine via the weird specific circumstances of the two people in the relationship. Also because what they have isn’t romantic love at least on Castors part. Low key very hard to elaborate, but this is why I started writing a fanfic for these two. Please ask questions 🥺
✩ ‧₊˚ ⌞ P L A N A R C A D I A T H O U G H T S ( 4 . 0 ) ⌝ sampo analysis m.list — what the stars reveal: aha!sampo, analysis, 4.0, planarcadia, divergent universe: arcadian chronicles, casual list turned multi-part behemoth, aha!sampo is everywhere for those with the eyes to see — word count: 2k — overview: (4 .0) a compilation of aha!sampo (and sampo in general) clues / easter eggs in planarcadia. includes discussion of planarcadia’s divergent universe update as well. To be clear, beyond a straightforward “Aha is Sampo and Sampo is Aha” interpretation, I also subscribe to past Aha!Sampo who was abandoned by his own “self”, as well as the idea that he’s Aha’s “reflection” or shadow. I am specifically partial to Sampo as Aha’s Body while Aha’s Mask holds the Aeonic authority via its light — essentially, Aha only “truly” emerges with the combination of Sampo the Body putting on the Mask. (Those ideas will also be present here.) — Aha’s action bar skill is called “Unboxing Surprise,” similar to Sampo’s “Surprise Present” burst. I’m torn: — On one hand, the red goblet card with Aha’s signature mask (you can tell because of the spikes at the top where the light would be) could symbolize Sampo, a former or abandoned Aha, now occupying the position of a card (or Masked Fool), who is clearly not happy about his predicament. In this case, the blue card with the pi symbol in the second photo could also symbolize Sampo since it has those spikes. These two cards could be his dual sides as a former Aha, now reduced to cards and the vacant space for Aeonic authority at the top. — On the other hand, Sampo is directly referred to as “Black Joker” and “Red Joker” by Sparkle in Hi3, which makes me think Sampo is 1) the black card shown in the Planarcadia trailer, and 2) the red joker present on-screen when Aha deals damage. This would place him in a more active role, since the red joker card is pretty much Aha in action. — If Sampo is the blue and red cards here, it could additionally symbolize that Aha is also a Fool, or takes the guise of a Fool. — Lots of reflection motifs, they come up everywhere. Specifically, when we are on our way to the Tavern, the “Ferryfae” says: “An old friend returns to fish out the moon’s reflection in the water.” The mention of “old friend” as we’re on our way to the Tavern sticks out to me, as does some of the mirrored Interplanar Jump gameplay, where there is literally a reflection of our character, shadowed and translucent, that we need to find to become “one” again. — Notably, the Aha Laugh room has a darker, blue reflection on the other side. (It reminds me of “two sides of the same coin.”) — I won’t include it all here, but the Miss Mary phone booth interaction that talks about Belobog and leaves us a note at the end is definitely Sampo-related. Notably, one of the calls before the note talks about Miss Mary being “abandoned” in the trashcan, stating, “you grew up, and heartlessly left me in the closet” and “[you tossed] me into the trashcan like some worthless rag.” This could be indicative of a previously-abandoned Aha!Sampo, but Miss Mary’s general thing is “abandoned doll” so it may not be specific to him. — At the very least, the Belobog part mentions “taking it slow and smelling the roses” and moving at one’s own pace, which comes as more of a solid connection to Sampo given the presence of Belobog. However, he does sign his letter the “King of Trashcans,” and since Miss Mary did specifically mention trashcans by name, perhaps those earlier parts could still apply. — Either way, interesting stuff! — This could be a translation error, but when Zhongshan talks about meeting Aha in person, she says “he.” — She also, generally, brings up the idea of Aha being among the Fools. — Aha’s ban sign right next to the glowing blue door that sounds like Sampo’s laugh when you hit it. Either this could be insight into how Sampo feels about Aha personally — notice that only the mask is banned; the silhouette/body is not on the sign — or a very ironic twist of fate (being banned from his own Tavern). I actually really like the idea of Body Sampo getting pissed at Mask Aha and putting Them in the figurative time-out corner. — The reason for Aha being banned could align with Sampo being abandoned by Them as well. — Or, the abandonment coincided with Aha!Sampo “losing” his Mask, making it pretty much impossible for Aha to respond. — Another option is that Sampo (the door) is melancholic because Aha was banned — he has no choice but to realize his own followers have cast him out (“betrayed” him). Himeko even says that the action is meaningless but the message is loud and clear. What matters in this case is the message the Fools sent: That they don’t want Aha, that they are the students expelling the teacher from a classroom. Of course Aha doesn’t have to comply, but it’s a hit to the ego regardless. — As for masks, we now have confirmation that Sampo directly “lost” his mask — this could be for any number of reasons: perhaps the Mask of Aha abandoned its Body (Sampo), perhaps it has something to do with Asat Pramad, or perhaps Sampo simply got too drunk one night, left his Mask on the table, and someone accidentally spirited it away. Who knows? — Also: “losing one’s mask” could be similar to “losing one’s head,” which is what Aha says to “Akivili” (The Trailblazer) in the Simulated Universe. Now I’m thinking about Body Aha!Sampo without his “head” (Mask). — The Barrel! It’s like meeting a celebrity! The text for the barrel / Sparkle doll reads: “Lifting the flimsy lid reveals a Sparkle Doll with a painted face, sitting upright in the center of the empty barrel. In front of it is a note with a smiley face drawn on it: “My sincerest thanks to Miss Sparkle for ‘keeping’ my mask. I shall one day return the favor… in full.” — The note Sampo leaves Sparkle makes mention of Sparkle “keeping” Sampo’s mask, in quotations. I’m not exactly sure that that might mean, other than if Aha (the Mask) was held hostage in some way by Sparkle until Sampo was ready to use it. No idea how the logistics of that would work, though. — He also mentions returning the favor “in full,” which is so juicy and cryptic! I’d love to see the Sampo ➜ Aha switch happen via Mask, and then Sparkle getting whatever benefits they decided on beforehand. — There is also the possibility that Sparkle somehow stole his mask, found it, or tricked him out of it, and the whole note is a passive-aggressive dig at her (“keeping” “… in full” etc.). (Although I think this clashes with the Penacony conversation a bit, where the vibe, to me, seemed that she was doing him a favor.) — Also, he drew a smiley face on the note. :) — Sampo, as an operator, not intervening directly in the Cosmicon Collective because others would just assume he used tricks rather than skill. This could be similar reasoning for why Aha doesn’t interfere in certain situations. — At the top of the mafia building (the inverse of where the Tavern is), there is the specific text: “The city lights twinkle in the distance, mirroring the stars above. And you stand alone in this massive, luxurious office. It feels a little lonely at the top.” The phrase “It feels a little lonely at the top.” especially gets to me, in light of the “Great Climber” I will discuss later. Reaching the pinnacle of existence, becoming untouchable, only to wish to come back down. — Also, note mirroring as a theme once again. — Notably, as far as Sparkle is concerned, it is now canon that Aha did have a First Laugh. I take this to mean the Masked Fools’ fable is not far off, and if later clues are anything to go by, I think Aha climbing the Imaginary Tree actually happened. I’d also like to think this is because Sampo started the rumor or fable based on his own experiences! — The Blisstar that houses Aha’s Primordial Laughter is a split mask of red and blue, Sampo’s signature color motifs. Also, he seems to be able to appear and disappear from the room at will. Also, if he is in fact high-up in the Tavern, then he literally just has part of Aha’s first laugh on hand. Casually. — The Portrait of Elation in the Tavern’s collection room is simply a dark blue mirror that reads: Know Thyself. Divergent Universe — In Arcadian Chronicle: Moonlit Tales, the story “Do Aeons Weep for THEMSELVES?” seems like it might have something to do with Sampo, but it’s filtered through so many layers that I can’t quite make sense of it. Presumably a Sparkle stand-in talks about the mask Hanami, and how it hops from host to host getting bored of each wearer, discarding others along the way. The story of being confronted by a Hanami Killer, which doesn’t believe “Sparkle” has already been discarded, then having to run and hide, questioning her sense of self, feels somewhat Sampo-aligned to me. Potentially a previously-abandoned Aha!Sampo running into trouble with Asat Pramad or other enemies. — Especially the “Hey, Boss! You’re jumping the gun.” line, since that’s usually a term only Sampo uses out of the two. — But who knows, honestly it’s a little confusing to me. — The questions to “Ego” are also very existential, like “Who am I?” which can track with Sparkle, but also, potentially, a Sampo who finds it hard to conceptualize himself outside of Aha. — Also, aside from Aha, I also think Sampo could be “Dealer” from Divergent Universe. (Sampo quite literally functions as an information broker and “dealer” in his daily life.) However, it is important to note that “Dealer” is in quotations, and I take that to mean “Dealer” might just be Aha doing more shenanigans in a different way. — The Infinite Improbability Elation Boundary Equation also screams Sampo to me. It reminds me of the “infinite” pi blue card mentioned earlier, as well as the “improbability” of all his little mysteries like not leaving footprints and appearing and disappearing at will. — Very suspicious that the Equation grants Aha an “extra turn” with a fixed amount of points, rather than any other buff. Basically, it makes Aha act again, directly. — Another point of note is that, when Infinite Improbability shows up on the Equation sidebar, the picture specifically focuses on what looks to be Masks surrounding the blue pi card. I feel like this could be a hint towards Sampo being the silhouette or “true self” under the Mask(s), otherwise surrounded (and even shielded protectively) by the Masks of Aeonic authority. — “Two” Masks, with the “two” in quotations, also brings back the running themes of duality in Sampo’s character, as well as the more recent general theme of split personalities in Planarcadia. I’ve posited for a while that Aha may be literally dual-sided in consciousness, with “joy” and “sorrow” representing two sides of the same coin, and we can see that here in one side of the mask being dark and frowning, while the other is light and shining. — “Two” being in quotations is especially interesting, because it implies that the number is not entirely true. To me, I read it as the mask really only being one, but coming across as “two.” This could be similar to an Aha!Sampo with a sort of split personality — to most, this would seem like two personalities, two sets of eyes, two bodies, but the reality is they’re one and the same. — This is a little random, but going forward, I’m also going to keep in mind that Sampo might be initially introduced as a “guy who just knows Aha really well,” even if he is Aha. Similar to “Spirithief” Bartholos and Zagreus, I’ll keep my eyes peeled, because “I just know Them” might not be the whole story. There may be some truth Sampo is literally unable to say, for risk of exposing himself, his plans, or a greater endgame. (The “Spirithief,” too, pretended to just be really close with Zagreus so no one would find out the truth that they were one and the same.) thanks for reading to the end !! :3 © analysis by sunderingstars. do not copy, repost, translate, modify, or claim my work as your own. do not feed my work to ai.
