I have a theory that part of the reason George is so angry at James is because everyone, including James, has been able to escape from Ash Park as they please, except George himself who is expected to just take on all the stress and deal with it eloquently even though he’s as human as the rest of the characters!
It’s so sad in a place to call home, because George Bligh always tries his best to do right by others even if it means getting hurt himself, yet the other characters barely seem to acknowledge this. Like it’s just expected of him. By no means does George have the hardest time out of all the characters- characters like Sarah, Jack, and James have immense, deep trauma- but George has had his fair share of heart break. He had already lost his wife to a bombing when he was posted in Darwin in WWII and she travelled with him. According to his confirmed backstory, he was denied the right to fight on the frontline in WWII due to his skillset and social standing, and he was instead posted as a Logistical and administrative officer. The bombing happened when he was across the road from the building that was bombed, and his wife was in the building… So at the start of the series George Bligh has already had an abusive/neglectful childhood thanks to his father and his manipulative mother, is likely feeling guilty from being forbidden from signing up to fight in the war, and he lost his wife to a bombing… Then he gets his heart broken more than once in the series and his mother and sister-in-law conspire against him, he gets shot, and he is drugged, and yet from season 1 he still tries his best to do the right thing in any given situation. My point is that we very rarely see him getting comforted or supported by other people. Not genuinely at least. And because he is a man of the 1950s and is under a lot of pressure, he just deals with everything in stoic silence. And it’s really quite heart breaking 💔
