Nahant Life Saving Station. Built in 1898, it was designed to launch surfboats, consisting of 7-8 lifesavers in either direction, across Short Beach to Broad Sound, or into Nahant Bay in order to rescue victims of coastal wrecks. The crew took turns by day in the tower (in the left hand side of the image) keeping a lookout for distress signals and at night patrolled the shore. When a wreck was sighted the crew would launch one of the surfboats in the direction of the wreck and rescue anyone they found. In 1915 the station was made a part of the U.S. Coast Guard, and by the 1920s was using motorized lifeboats. The station remained in use until 1964, years later in 2012, it was reopened as an events facility. It was built as part of a coastal network of rescue stations on the east coast. In fact from what I found it was one of thirty or so built in Massachusetts around 1900. Right now it is one of twelve structures that are still standing. It is a total of four stories tall, with a detached four bay boathouse.
