The government offered free land in Muskoka in the 1860s — 100 acres to anyone that could clear it. What they didn’t mention? The soil was barely 6 inches deep before hitting Canadian Shield granite. Settlers had to clear 15 acres and build a house within 5 years just to keep what they were promised. The ones who stayed didn’t just farm — they built community. And when the thin soil finally gave out, these same families didn’t quit. They turned their farmhouses into boarding houses, welcomed the first tourists off the Gravenhurst railway, and essentially invented the Muskoka we know today. Cottage country was born from that resilience. Historical sources: Ontario Heritage Trust & Township of Muskoka Lakes
