Recently @ludacris, who also has #English and #NativeAmerican ancestry according to #Wikipedia, created an animated series inspired by his eldest daughter. Earlier this month the @blackishabc family were also animated for an episode about the upcoming election. But besides these two new examples, I can’t think of any other animated characters that are mixed race, portray a #mixedfamily or are about being mixed race at all. The only ones that come to mind is the Oscar winning #Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, where the lead character, an #afrolatino teen named Miles Morales is bitten by a spider. And #Netflix’s adult cartoon comedy #BigMouth, which features a #mixedrace girl, Missy Greenwald, who has a #Black and a #White parent that are both progressive hippies. But I feel like I’m missing someone important off the top of my head. Right?? Or are there just 2 #mixedcharacters, periodt??? Representation matters! If you could talk to #Hollywood, #Netflix, #Disney, etc, how do you think they can better represent #mixedpeople in their productions? How and what would represent us in the right ways? Last year I got the chance to illustrate one story for an educational product at work (written by Marjolein Wennekers) and I’m really happy with the result. The first time portraying a mixed family. We feel it is important children of mixed backgrounds in the Netherlands can also recognize themselves in educational pictures. It’s a small story of 8 pages, it’s meant for close-reading exercise. I did have a really hard time squashing all of the details into it, because on one page there would be text and there had to be an illustration. I really had to look very carefully at how to portray the scenes. I think the result is that there’s a lot more dynamic in the drawings than there usually was in my illustrations, so I think I grew during the process. Thanks for watching and I hope you like it :)
