For the past year, we have been working our way through the David McCheyne Newell Film Collection. Dave Newell was a renaissance man: a sportsman, explorer, author, editor, filmmaker, television star, producer, fisherman, and proponent of land, wildlife, and habitat conservation. He was one of several cameramen on the 1931 Matto Grosso Expedition , and even wrote articles for the New York Times during the expedition. We first learned about him from his early 1950s tv show “Sportsman’s Club,” some film prints of which were among the Pebble Hill Plantation films donation. After a little research, we partnered with the Leesburg (Florida) Heritage Society to preserve Newell’s surviving films as we are able to. Many of the films suffered from decades in Florida’s humidity, and others have the usual chemical deterioration problems of old film. The surviving reels are primarily outtakes or work prints, not final sound films, but FISHING FUN IN FLORIDA (copyright 1952) is complete and still has that vibrant Kodachrome color. The film was sponsored by Ashaway Line & Twine Manufacturing Co.–still in business today–and touts the fine properties of Ashaway’s fishing line.
