Thanks to the gentle influence of @blackfeministvegan, I decided to once again abandon my bra and see how it feels physically and mentally. So far so good, especially since the only bra I have doesn’t fit AND is an underwire😩 —— I first tried it out a couple of years ago during a raw food phase in the winter (I don’t know how I did it y’all😳) and it felt great, but I was able to hide it better over all the heavy sweaters. It lasted a while but I eventually stopped out of fear of judgment and deeply rooted insecurities. I’ve always been chesty so this isn’t just a cute little experiment for me, this is a test of how I feel about myself and what I’m willing to do for my personal comfort. —— This is also a reminder that not everyone feels comfortable doing this. Sometimes bras are preferred for heavy-chested folk; and I can attest to that being miserable at 12 years old with a 38 DDD cup😑 Even though this aims to challenge society’s views and sexualization surrounding breasts, some people feel more empowered wearing them and there’s no shame in that! Our acts of resistance are not going to look the same which is fuckin awesome🤘🏾 —— So I’ll update y’all of my progress as time goes on. I can already tell this is going to challenge my mental more than anything else, but I’m ready for what this is going to teach me. Fuck beauty standards and the weight of them on your psyche. I wish it was easier to ignore them. I wish it was easier to love yourself for who you are. But just because it isn’t easy, doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. Every photo you see that doesn’t fit into the box of what big media calls beauty helps. Ok y'all. This is a tough one for me. Everyone knows I wear wigs, but lots of you don’t know it’s not just for fashion. It’s because my hair doesn’t really grow, and when it does, it’s super thin and lots of really sparse patches and roving bald spots due to a mild case of alopecia. About 8+ years ago I decided to say “fuck it” and shave my head and start wearing wigs. It’s been great. But I’ve been asked what I look like without a wig on. Well, I’ve been spending the last year trying to be more forgiving of myself as it relates to my own body image. At 50 years old, it can be hard to love yourself as you are. So I got weight loss surgery and I buy expensive, good quality wigs. But I decided it was a good thing for my ego to post what I look like without all the “fakery”, as I’ve had it called. This is me. No wig. No makeup. (Well, mascara and moisturizers but that’s it.) Laugh away.
