Let’s just stop pretending. The school dress code isn’t really about “avoiding distractions” or “promoting professionalism.” It’s about control. It’s about adults in authority being way too preoccupied with what teenagers are wearing — especially girls. If a tank top or a pair of shorts is enough to “distract” a grown adult, the problem isn’t with the student. It’s with the adult. Full stop. Why is it always coded language like “modesty” or “appropriateness”? Why is the blame placed on students for the way their bodies look in completely normal clothing? You’re telling me a shoulder, a collarbone, or a strip of skin above the knee is somehow going to destroy the learning environment? That’s not protecting kids. That’s projecting adult discomfort and twisted cultural baggage onto young people who are just trying to exist. It’s especially messed up when you realize how unevenly dress codes are enforced. Girls get policed more. Bigger-bodied students get targeted more. Certain racial groups are scrutinized more. And for what? Because an adult might think something is “too much”? That’s not education. That’s systemic objectification hiding behind a rulebook. Teachers and staff should be focused on teaching, mentoring, and creating a safe, supportive environment — not hovering around hallways like fashion police with rulers and judgment. If your response to a child’s clothing is to make them feel ashamed of their body instead of examining your own reaction , then you’re in the wrong. School should be a place where kids can learn, grow, and feel safe — not a place where they’re taught that their bodies are a problem to be hidden. So maybe instead of obsessing over spaghetti straps and shorts, we should ask why this outdated mindset is still running our schools — and who it’s really serving.
