having a decommissioned satellite as a character sure is an experience yes this is talking about chipsat like ok ok. the concept is weird. who in their right mind looks at a list of satellites and chooses one to personify? like in what other context would anyone have to do that, beyond an obscure fandom’s even obscurer discord rp? who does that? like there’s no other reason i can imagine besides a roleplay. or maybe you just really like gjinka, which is cool. im just rambling anyway you dont need a reason to go “hey, what if it walked?” ever since joining the rp, and reading 17776 and 20020 in general, ive grown an entirely new appreciation for the space program. there was so much going on above my head that i didnt even know about. little satellites the size of my palm, probes that take up entire football fields. rovers the size of an suv and landers that i could fit in my backpack. all of these tiny pieces of tech that thousands of people put years of work into and yet… sometimes, they get forgotten. silently shut down. commanded to fall into the subject of their studies, whether it be lack of funding, age, failure of instruments. usually when a satellite has no more use, like completing or failing the mission or it’s instruments fail, it’s either slingshot out of orbit or commanded to fall into the atmosphere or planet. why use precious time and funding to keep a satellite operating right? but then there’s chipsat. chipsat is a microsatellite, a little bigger than a briefcase. the purpose of the satellite was to use a very sensitive spectrometer (Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer, or CHIPS, the spacecraft’s namesake) to analyze a bubble of superhot gas, in a very small clearance of the UV spectrum, in an all-sky spectroscopy. even though the scientists thought they did all the calculations right to find what they were looking for, couldnt youve guessed? they didnt find what they wanted. but they did keep the craft going for five years, and instead of deorbiting it, it was shut down. just a small little goodbye, and if they needed to turn it on again they could. so its on a near-polar orbit, making it’s revolution around the earth every hour. but that’s… i dunno it’s just strange to me. why go through all the effort? why keep it maintained when you don’t even keep the website up? the website is only accessible through wayback machine now and it’s just a little sad, to me, and i cant properly explain it but it just kinda feels like it’s been failed. i have more thoughts on this but this has been in my drafts for days now and im too tired to really put down the rest of my thoughts, but if i find the inspiration again ill make a few reblogs. in the meantime thanks for reading my incoherent ramblings.
