I'm reading your story with Pava and I love it so much! Thank you for including all the end notes with context and links to the bits you incorporate, I just started watching PWHL after the Olympics so most of the hockey lore is brand new to me. Newf is such a fun dude character, I love the impenetrable accent and the collection of ugly sticks! My little gay heart kinda really wants to see him or Ilya play Come From Away in the locker room when they control the music-- it came out in 2017 and was still on Broadway, the cast album was out, and it has a strong plot about gay characters and a bunch of Newfie accents.
This!!!! I actually got to see Come From Away twice in person during the Canadian tour, and I actually was inspired to write the ugly stick collection when I watched the proshot not too long ago. I always say Hitch from Shoresy is my main inspiration for Newf, but I pull a lot of ideas from Come From Away as well. I ❤️ Cancon!!!
Over the past year or so, there’s been a spate of U.S. cartoon reviewers on YouTube reviewing Canadian cartoons and being absolutely AGHAST that X-Y-Z tween cartoon allowed this-or-that mature subject or crude joke to go to air, and it’s just like. well. it’s because Canada has different standards for what’s acceptable to air on children’s television than the U.S. has. most of the world is not subject to U.S. standards and practices. I hope this helps.

It’s always weird when non-Canadians become fans of Canadian media. I just saw a post about about Heated Rivalry that imagined an autistic kid whose special interest is Shane Hollander and who gets to meet Shane Hollander at a camp where Shane is able to relate to him in a way others can’t. It was really cute! But it was so obviously written by a non-Canadian. I literally cannot imagine a boy being unpopular for hyper-fixating on hockey. He had to hand-make hockey valentines because the stores didn’t sell them? I got plenty of store-bought hockey valentines when I was in elementary school. In Canada, a little boy who eats, sleeps, and breathes hockey is just… a little boy. Like, I doubt anyone would even think something was off. Boys got picked on if they didn’t obcess hockey. The OP didn’t specify whether the boy was supposed to be Canadian (and I’m making this a separate post because I don’t want to seem critical. The post was really cute!), but the premise is something that I can even fathom. A Canadian could never come up with the idea of someone being unpopular for liking hockey.
There should be an English CanConCom channel that airs solely Canadian comedy. (A French one would follow immediately.) It would be seven days a week of SCTV, the Kids in the Hall, Corner Gas, Schitt’s Creek, Little Mosque on the Prairie, CODCO, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Kim’s Convenience, Rick Mercer’s Talking To Americans, The Trailer Park Boys, The Red Green Show, The Newsroom, Letterkenny, Mr. D, Workin’ Moms, Kevin Spencer, Kenny & Spenny, This is Wonderland, Black Fly, the Royal Canadian Air Farce, Wayne & Schuster, Made in Canada…
