Lift Every Voice and Sing Well with the Super Bowl dust up over the Black National Anthem it felt appropriate to ask chatGPT. I will note that at my nine-year old daughter’s school in Brooklyn they always sing the Black National Anthem so she knows it. Me: Write a scene with an African American father explaining the history an importance of the Black National Anthem to his daughter ChatGPT: African American Father: Hey there, baby girl. You know, I was thinking we could talk about something important today. Do you know what the Black National Anthem is? Daughter: No, Daddy. What is it? African American Father: Well, it’s a song called “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” It was written by James Weldon Johnson and his brother John Rosamond Johnson, two African American brothers, back in 1900. It was first performed as a poem to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and became a song in the 1920s. Daughter: Why is it important? African American Father: Well, for starters, it’s a celebration of our culture and heritage. It’s a way for us to honor our ancestors and the sacrifices they made for us. It’s also a way for us to show our pride in being African American and to remember the struggles and challenges we’ve faced as a community. Daughter: That sounds cool, Daddy. African American Father: It is, baby girl. But it’s also important for us to understand the history behind the song and the message it conveys. It was written at a time when African Americans were fighting for their rights and facing a lot of discrimination and oppression. The lyrics talk about overcoming obstacles and rising up, even in the face of adversity. Daughter: Wow, I never knew that. African American Father: Yeah, and that’s why it’s so important for us to learn about and remember our history. We need to understand where we’ve come from and what our ancestors went through so that we can appreciate all that we have today and continue to fight for our rights and equality. Daughter: I understand, Daddy. Can we sing it together? African American Father: Of course, baby girl. Let’s sing it loud and proud. [Father and daughter sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”] Me: What are the lyrics to Lift Every Voice and Sing? ChatGPT: Here are the lyrics to “Lift Every Voice and Sing” also known as the Black National Anthem: Lift every voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native land.
“Lift ev'ry voice and sing ‘Til earth and heaven ring Ring with the harmonies of Liberty Let our rejoicing rise High as the list'ning skies Let it resound loud as the rolling sea Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on 'til victory is won.” #losangeles #blacknationalanthem #rainbow #hipstervania #silverlake (at Silver Lake) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHT4rcFrHHI/?igshid=tp8vr82wvyxz

The NFL has reportedly decided to play the Black National Anthem before every Week 1 game. “Lift Ev'ry Voice And Sing” – which is often referred to as the Black National Anthem will be played or performed before the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ prior to every game in the first week of the season. Also the names of victims of police brutality will be displayed on players’ helmets and jerseys. Report: The #NFL will play the Black national anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing,” prior to the start of each Week 1 matchup, reports The Undefeated. The anthem will be played or performed live prior to “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Jason Reid of The Undefeated reported the NFL and NFLPA are also considering listing the names of victims of police brutality on uniforms: “Having recently displayed increased awareness about the problems of systemic racism, the NFL, in collaboration with the NFL Players Association, is also considering listing the names of victims on uniforms through decals on helmets or patches on jerseys. The NFL also may produce educational programs about victims, among other plans.” Commissioner #RogerGoodell said in June the league was wrong in its handling of player protests, often suppressig #Blackvoices rather than allowing them to use their platform to call for change. The NFL also revealed a plan to donate $250 million to a variety of causes over a 10-year period. #unheardvoicesmag #blacknationalanthem #socialjustice #lifteveryvoice #lifteveryvoiceandsing https://www.instagram.com/p/CCJ74DdlCuo/?igshid=1e5zhj1udvk1z

My son is a 19-year-old Black man in the United States and today was his first time voting in a presidential election. I’ve witnessed many milestones in his life: his first words, his first steps, his first day of college. And to be in a voting booth this afternoon while he cast his ballot in the booth to my right was an equally emotional and sacred moment. I am grateful that he took voting seriously and demonstrated his commitment to democracy, our nation, and humanity as a whole. I’m so proud of him for continuing to embody the clarity, intelligence, and grace of our ancestors. We honor the sacrifices they made when we show up to the polls. “Facing the rising sun of our new day begun. A Change Gon Come - Sam Cooke I was born by the river, in a little tent Oh, and just like the river I’ve been running ever since It’s been a long A long time coming But I know a change gonna come Oh, yes it will It’s been too hard living But I’m afraid to die ‘Cause I don’t know what’s up there Beyond the sky It’s been a long A long time coming But I know a change gonna come Oh, yes it will I go to the movie And I go downtown Somebody keep telling me Don’t hang around It’s been a long A long time coming But I know, a change gonna come Oh, yes it will Then I go to my brother And I say, brother, help me please But he winds up, knockin’ me Back down on my knees Oh, there been times that I thought I couldn’t last for long But now I think I’m able, to carry on It’s been a long A long time coming But I know a change gonna come Oh, yes it will #blacknationalanthem https://www.instagram.com/p/CKKmTXCnaFJ/?igshid=1qvknngz5d1pd
