Those first 5 were paper from sketchbook s I fixed the binding as it expanded with the layered pages. Then and now I make the canvas pages and grommet them and bolt them together. I was traditionally trained in beadwork by two Native American women who because of the nature of my art wish to be anonymous. Abstract Expressionism had a big influence on me in my teenage years which helped to give me inspiration and use beadwork in a new way as a painter would, using beads as texture, shape and line instead of always for motifs and symbols. My work is just as much sculpture as painting. Also in the old Master tradition of Master- apprentice I am a descendent of sculptor Rodin (The Thinker , Gates of Hell) which helped me to see and use beads as a sculptor would. My work is often transgressive and outrageous as Dali said, “ 99% outrage and 1% respectability. Often times people say of my work ,,” Leyba you have gone too far!“ Of which I reply, ” but that is the only place I have wanted to go.“ rather than corporate and art world defined narratives. The explosion took the lives of thirty people and destroyed a large portion of the neighborhood. Al-Mutanabbi Street is named after the famous classical Arab poet Abu at-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi (915–965 CE), and it has been a thriving center of Baghdad’s bookselling and publishing for many years. The book sellers, who survived, rebuilt their stores and are once again in business. They sell works by Sunnis, Shiites, Christians, and Jews, children’s books, and progressive publications from around the world. ALT ALT ALT February is also National Embroidery Month , and we’re excited to show you some cool items we have in the Special Collections. The first one is a hand-embroidered canvas book made by Candace Hicks who collects coincidences from the books she reads and gathers them in her artists’ books and installations. Hicks created a variant series of hand-embroidered books, copying the form and design of dime-store “composition” books. This saturday @krankartgallery, we’re also debuting @coeditions.london’s first endeavor in the form of #slimeditions with my book, Your Brain Is Not For Thinking ~~~🧠~~~ Psyched to collaborate with my angel @ozgeinal again as countless times before but this time, as she realizes her long-germinating publishing venture ♡ YBinfT is an art book using graphical elements with a painter’s sensibility, a compendium of cut-up mantras fueled by creative anxiety. Waking up low poly one morning, Z. scrambles to conjure identity and complexity through snippets of biographies and popular science books. Slim Editions is an ongoing series of slim volumes by co/editions; each issue freely designed within a predetermined template by a different artist, in collaboration with curators, writers and designers. 20 of 250 editions will be available @krankartgallery.

Look at artists books for inspiration To develop my experiments with Layout and type, I have decided to look at Artists books to see how I can convey a message clearly using a more visual method. Dawn I like how the artist has used different colours and hand writing to tell the reader different things about the leaf. This makes it easier to depict what each section is trying to tell you and why. By printing the leaves in a brown colour it reminds me of earth which links to nature. I like how this ties the colours with the imagery and topic. Furthermore, by using a dark blue for the time stamp, it contrasts with the brown prints, allowing them to be legible even when they are overlapped. By using a scripted handwriting for the thought and phrases, it gives the book a more personal feeling. It clearly shows that the writing is showing something personal. This shows that the book is a documentation of the artists personal experience that day. By using a hand binding method this enforces that this book is personal. Additionally, by making the prints blurred it implies that the story behind them is unknown. This tells me that the writing is more definite then the prints themselves. Agree to Disagree This artists book intrigued me because it requires the viewer to interact with it. I like how the message changes depending on which part of the page you turn. This allows the viewer to interpret it differently every time they interact with it. I also like how it gives the viewer control on how they read the book. This method may be useful for my project because it will allow me to explore how mixing up the conversations changes the meaning behind them. This method could also help me to explore how I can show two different sides of conversations by using different colours; by using a white typefaces of the word on the back of the sections, it leaves a ‘ghost’ of the word.
