The Day Alexandria Was Swallowed by the Sea For centuries, the great city of Alexandria stood as one of the wonders of the ancient world. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, it was home to magnificent palaces, bustling harbors, and the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria. Yet much of this glorious city would eventually disappear beneath the waters of the Mediterranean. The catastrophe was not the result of a single day but of a series of powerful earthquakes and tidal waves that struck the region over many centuries. One of the most devastating occurred in AD 365, when a massive earthquake near Crete generated a tsunami that slammed into Alexandria’s coastline. Ancient accounts describe ships hurled inland, buildings collapsing, and thousands of people perishing. Further earthquakes in the following centuries weakened the city’s foundations. Entire districts built on unstable ground slowly subsided into the sea. The royal quarter, where the Ptolemaic kings and the famous queen Cleopatra VII Philopator once lived, gradually vanished beneath the waves. Parts of the great harbor followed. For more than a thousand years, the lost monuments of Alexandria remained hidden underwater. Then, in the 1990s, marine archaeologists discovered a submerged world of fallen columns, sphinxes, statues, and palace ruins resting on the seabed. These remarkable finds revealed that much of ancient Alexandria had indeed been swallowed by the sea. Today, divers can explore the sunken remains of one of history’s greatest cities. The ruins beneath Alexandria’s harbor serve as a reminder that even the most magnificent centers of civilization are not immune to the forces of nature. What was once the jewel of the Mediterranean now lies partly beneath its waters, preserving a silent chapter of the ancient world.

! https://www.instagram.com/r.a.n.d.o.m.sh.o.t.s
