Today many people approach āsana as if the goal is to achieve the posture deeper stretch, straighter legs, more flexibility. The body becomes something we try to push and organize so the pose looks correct. But traditionally the purpose of āsana was never only the external shape. When you stay in a posture with steady breath, something more subtle begins to happen. The pose starts revealing the body from the inside where there is holding, where there is softness, where the breath is restricted. This is why the ancient texts speak about sthira and sukha, steadiness and ease. The posture becomes a doorway into the śarīra and into the movement of prāṇa. So the pose is not something we conquer with the body. The āsana becomes a method of svādhyāya — self-observation. Which brings us back to the question behind the practice… Are we using the body to force ourselves into a pose, or are we allowing the pose to bring us back into the body?
