汪峰:亲爱的,今夜你在哪里?(Wang Feng: Darling, where are you tonight?) Wang Feng is better known for his powerful anthems, like 《飞得更高》(Flying Higher), 《怒放的生命》(A Life in Full Bloom), and 《存在》(existence); and of course, they are all spectacular. But this song, from his 2015 album 《河流》(The River), is quite underrated and low-key, with some beautiful lyrics and a wonderful soundscape. I used the former translation with the first one, but found out about the second later. I think I’ve already been able to let go When thoughts of love slowly enter into late autumn. But darling, where are you tonight? many kisses quietly brush faraway like the wind. At this moment, I am weary and sad. darling, where are you tonight? The blue harbor is fast asleep in the mist. the ship horns beside the dock are like a Jeep’s nocturne. I guess I can already forget, when the winter night slowly permeates the dawn. But darling, where are you tonight? past events saturate like the rain on pine trees. Now, I am weary and hesitant. [So] Darling, where are you tonight? But darling, where are you tonight? Vows fall onto the street like the snow. At this moment, I am weary and sad. Darling, where are you tonight? I am absent-minded and intoxicated Darling, where are you tonight? Darling, where are you tonight? Translation by Elda Mengisto/孟乐达
Summer 2014: I volunteered at Ryther, an organization which helped children with social skills issues. Everyday after work, I would frequently surf online and listen to music. At around that time, I only listened to two Chinese artists at that point despite studying Chinese for three years. I also particularly liked the song “Beijing Beijing, I love you Beijing” from the 2008 Olympics. When I saw the song “Beijing, Beijing”, I clicked on the link, thinking it was the original. I was wrong. This “Beijing, Beijing” was really haunting and somber, talking about Beijing as a sad location, but also one where the narrator would want to be buried if he was exiled. The line “the three blocks between the coffee shop and the square/is like that between the neon lights and the moon” especially stood out. This was the first time I encountered Wang Feng’s music, and needless to say I was touched by his sound. His most famous songs are his anthems about life 《飞得更高》 (Fly HIgher), 《怒放的生命》 (Blooming Life), 《存在》 (Existence), etc, but he’s just as capable of writing more low-key ballads 《硬币》 (Coin), 《像个孩子》 (Like a Child), 《我如此爱你》 (I love you so much)。Even his more underrated songs are worth listening to. 《当我想你的时候》 (When I Think of You) accompanied me when I thought of a friend I had fallen out of. 《春天里》 (In the Spring) invokes nostalgia and joy at the same time, even though our springs are not the same. And 《亲爱的,今夜你在哪里》 is filled with a poetic grace, when he looks for his lover. No matter how flowery his lyrics could be, Wang Feng finds a way with those and melodies to pierce your heart and make you think about life. And that makes him one of my favorite artists, not only in China, but also beyond. zh:
Found out there will be 汪峰 (Wang Feng) concerts when I am in China, in 2 cities I am going to and the timing aligns perfectly! They’re not cheap but I have to try… Has anyone here ever bought concert tickets for mainland China? I am going to try to figure We Chat Pay out but I’m afraid the mini-app (猫眼) might require a Chinese phone number…

I believe it’s the third year in a row Wang Feng is my top artist I think the top songs are different though. I’ve long been using it more for listening to podcasts though, and I mostly listen to music through other means including downloaded music, youtube (when looking for a specific song) or CDs (yeah, CDs; I have young students who don’t even know what those are!) When I do listen to music on Spotify it’s usually one of the same old playlists with maybe one or two new songs, so of course not much is likely to change in the top artists, but the top songs are kinda random…
(Wang Feng – Laughing while Crying) Here’s one of Wang Feng’s more underrated songs, from the album of the same name. I always loved this because of its nostalgic but hopeful feel, in accepting the world as it is, but still going out into the world. The sunlight sprinkles on your smiling face A tear quietly hangs in the corner of your eye. Your smile ignites my smile as if nothing has ever happened. Those winding clear teardrops I couldn’t guess whether they were those of joy or sorrow. Suddenly [in that space] I feel such a happy sadness. [I’ve] paid everything just to follow my dreams. Suddenly I feel such sadness in ecstasy However, everything is like this: laughing while crying. Life is also like a wandering cloud Rough and also a harvest. Pain is like singing a song from the top of one’s voice. Singing, “who could understand clearly?” It passes those fluctuating years. It passes those humiliations and glories. You see this bustling world– Smiling outwardly, while quietly crying. Suddenly [in that space] I feel such a happy sadness. [I’ve] paid everything just to follow my dreams. Suddenly I feel such sadness in ecstasy However, everything is like this: laughing while crying. Suddenly I understand the years reflected off of tears. [You’ve] paid everything just to go for your dreams Suddenly I understand the sadness hidden by a smile. All that life has to offer passes like this: laughing while crying. However, everything is like this: laughing while crying. (Translation by Elda Mengisto/孟乐达)
Green Jade Table: Lantern Festival At night the East wind flowers thousands of trees, And brings showers of glowing stars down the streets. Fine steeds and carved carriages with perfume strew the way; The Phoenix flute music spread away. The jade-pot lanterns revolve its ray, While all night long the fish and dragon lanterns sway. With moth-shaped jade, snow-willow and gold thread ornaments, The lady giggles and whispers, leaving a trail of subtle scents. A thousand times I search for him in the crowd, But when I turn around all of a sudden, There he is in the dim light of a lantern. — Xin Qiji, trans. by Zhang Shuyue and Wang Feng
