When “urban renewal” came to Uptown

Ancient subway sign for the 190th Street/Overlook Terrace station in upper Manhattan. I imagine it dates to the station’s 1932 opening. As NYC has come a long way from the Bad Old Days of the 1980s, I was surprised to find this sign in worse condition than it was then, when it was actually complete and functional. Gone are the lenses that would shield the row of lightbulbs inside. Somewhere I have a photo of this sign lit and working from those long-ago days, and I hope to find it someday. This photo was taken in June 2017.
