PL: Pomnik Unii Lubelskiej, Lublin Usytuowany na Placu Litewskim, upamiętnia zawarcie Unii Polsko-Litewskiej 1 lipca 1569 roku — jednego z przełomowych wydarzeń w historii Polski i Litwy. Miejsce pomnika nie jest przypadkowe, bowiem to tu obozowała szlachta litewska oraz odbywały się obrady sejmowe związane z unią. Pierwszy pomnik w tym miejscu został wystawiony jeszcze w 1569 roku z inicjatywy króla Zygmunta Augusta. Był to czworoboczny kamienno-ceglany obelisk z dwoma kamiennymi posągami symbolizującymi Polaka i Litwina lub Władysława Jagiełłę i królową Jadwigę. Został rozebrany w 1819 roku. Obecny pomnik odsłonięto 26 sierpnia 1826 roku z inicjatywy Stanisława Staszica. Projekt przygotowali Feliks Bentkowski (koncepcja) oraz Paweł Maliński (płaskorzeźby). Pomnik ma formę 13-metrowego żeliwnego obelisku na kwadratowym, murowanym podeście z granitowymi płytami. Na froncie postumentu znajduje się złocona płaskorzeźba przedstawiająca dwie kobiece postacie, symbolizujące Koronę Polską i Wielkie Księstwo Litewskie, które podają sobie dłonie. Między nimi umieszczone są herby — Orzeł Biały po stronie polskiej oraz Pogoń Litewska. Znaczenie pomnika podkreśla fakt, że upamiętnia on wielokulturową i wieloreligijną historię Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów, a także samą Unię Lubelską jako symbol trwałego zjednoczenia. Pomnik stanowi element Jagiellońskiego Szlaku Unii Lubelskiej i został uhonorowany Znakiem Dziedzictwa Europejskiego w 2007 roku. EN: The Union of Lublin Monument, Lublin, Poland It is located on Lithuanian Square, commemorates the signing of the Polish-Lithuanian Union on July 1, 1569 — one of the pivotal events in the history of Poland and Lithuania. The monument’s location is not accidental, as this was where the Lithuanian nobility camped and where parliamentary sessions related to the union were held. The first monument at this site was erected in 1569 on the initiative of King Sigismund II Augustus. It was a quadrilateral stone-and-brick obelisk with two stone statues symbolizing a Pole and a Lithuanian, or possibly Władysław Jagiełło and Queen Jadwiga. It was dismantled in 1819. The current monument was unveiled on August 26, 1826, thanks to the efforts of Stanisław Staszic. The design was prepared by Feliks Bentkowski (concept) and Paweł Maliński (bas-reliefs). The monument takes the form of a 13-meter iron obelisk on a square masonry pedestal with granite slabs. On the front of the pedestal, there is a gilded bas-relief depicting two female figures symbolizing the Polish Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, who are shaking hands. Between them are coats of arms — the White Eagle on the Polish side and the Lithuanian Pursuer (Pogoń) on the Lithuanian side. The significance of the monument is emphasized by the fact that it commemorates the multicultural and multireligious history of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as the Union of Lublin itself as a symbol of lasting unity. The monument is part of the Jagiellonian Trail of the Union of Lublin and was honored with the European Heritage Label in 2007.

But as Mary Rolinson demonstrates, the largest number of Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) divisions and Garvey’s most devoted and loyal followers were found in the southern Black Belt. Tracing the path of organizers from northern cities to Virginia, and then from the Upper to the Deep South, Rolinson remaps the movement to include this vital but overlooked region. Rolinson shows how Garvey’s southern constituency sprang from cities, countryside churches, and sharecropper cabins. Southern Garveyites adopted pertinent elements of the movement’s ideology and developed strategies for community self-defense and self-determination. These southern African Americans maintained a spiritual attachment to their African identities and developed a fiercely racial nationalism, building on the rhetoric and experiences of black organizers from the nineteenth-century South. Garveyism provided a common bond during the upheaval of the Great Migration, Rolinson contends, and even after the UNIA had all but disappeared in the South in the 1930s, the movement’s tenets of race organization, unity, and pride continued to flourish in other forms of black protest for generations.

After reading Booker T Washington’s autobiography, he was devoted to teaching the black community the importance of being self-reliant through education. He had high aspirations for building a worldwide organisation to empower people of African descent. His goals would inspire later leaders like Kwame Nkrumah, Steve Biko, and Malcolm X. Garveyism symbolised the transformation of how black people worldwide looked at themselves and their place in the world. Garveyism taught that Black people would only be recognised when they were economically and spiritually strong, preached an independent Black economy within the structure of white capitalism, and inducted a black spiritual leader, a flag and a black national anthem. The UNIA established the Negro Factories Corporation, the Black Star shipping Line (1919) and a chain of businesses, including grocery shops, restaurants, a printing press, laundries and a hotel. .
