This is a project close to my heart. I will do more marine conservation projects and global issues this year such as Shark Finning. One of the most affected species is the Oceanic Whitetip Shark. Whitetips were historically considered one of the most abundant shark species, research has suggested that the oceanic whitetip has suffered population declines of 70-80 percent in most areas, mostly due to being caught as bycatch in purse seine and longline fisheries as well as falling victim to the global shark fin trade. When the twins were about 6.5 months old Ellie and Oliver had their first official date night out. Her mom was in town and shooed them out of the house and told them they were not allowed back until the twins were deep in sleep. Romance was back.

TW: Hospital Two weeks after the accident two major events occurred, Ellie learned her baby was actually two babies! They were going to have twins! The other event was also good news, Oliver finally woke up. However, the full magnitude of his injuries became known. As the doctors and Ellie feared, Oliver was completely paralyzed beginning in the lower abdomen. The doctors explained that due to the extent of his back injury it would be next to impossible for a full recovery. If they were lucky, limited sensation could return. Oliver was silent once he realized what this would mean. No more soccer, no more sports, no more normalcy. He would have to change every aspect of his life to adapt to his new normal. As the weeks passed, Ellie was right at his side. Each day she was there. As an editor, her job could easily be done at home and her company accommodated her greatly. She was able to complete her work at the hospital and turn in tasks after business hours. Oliver had an incredibly hard time mentally accepting his injuries. He spent a lot of his time silent, not wanting to discuss any topic related or unrelated to his injury. Even discussing the upcoming editions to their family upset him. He didn’t think he could be much of a father from a seated position. Could he even pick a baby up out of a crib? He didn’t want to sit by and watch Ellie raise two babies all alone. Yet what could he do? He knew he wouldn’t be able to turn a switch and be back to normal. Months began to trickle by and Oliver began to open up to Ellie. He expressed his fears, they shared tears, and they discussed the ever so scary future. While Ellie spent nearly every moment at the hospital, her mother had temporarily moved into their house to watch over Minnie and be the shoulder for Ellie to lean on when she would return home after each long hospital day. Her mother was also able to help them get things ready for the babies. As much as she wanted to share the experience of creating and setting up the nursery with Oliver they had to get everything settled before he could come home. He would likely be home right before her due date and she wanted the nursery to be finished. Besides the nursery, their home had to be renovated to give Oliver access to areas that would restrict his movement. Such as wider doorways, an accessible shower, a stairway lift, and ramps installed in the front and back of the house. As Oliver’s broken bones and burns healed, he started intense physical therapy in order to learn how to move in his new body and adapt to a world not built for him. He would need to master some specific skills before he will be able to return home.

I dream of lazily drifting on the cold current as man-apes feed me from their tiny floating safe haven. . It’s not a bad living for those that are qualified.
