Why clean code becomes a maintenance nightmare | Psyll
The drive for ‘Clean Code,’ while well-intentioned, can often steer projects into turbulent waters, creating unforeseen complexities and maintenance burdens. What starts as a quest for elegance can easily devolve into over-engineered systems, riddled with excessive abstractions that obscure rather than clarify intent. Consider the impact on team efficiency: developers navigating layers of indirection or struggling with a “comment phobia” approach spend critical hours deciphering code instead of innovating. This isn’t just about minor inconveniences; it translates into substantial financial costs, with studies indicating tens of thousands of dollars lost per developer annually. The emphasis must shift from purely aesthetic cleanliness to pragmatic, understandable solutions that genuinely accelerate development and ease long-term maintenance.
Saving So Much Time We’re Slower (This column is posted at www.StevenSavage.com , Steve’s Tumblr , and Pillowfort . Find out more at my newsletter , and all my social media at my linktr.ee ) So let me lay out a theory here that the effort to go faster with modern software can often make things slower. If you’re ready for “Steve Rants About Software,” here you go. If not, anyway, read on, trust me. OK, let’s restate the thesis. I’m starting to think the way software makes things faster means, in time, everything runs slower. Anyway, you’re probably used to using software for speed. This thing moves faster. This thing does a task for you. I unabashedly love spreadsheet programs, they are amazing . I’m not a patient person, so I get it. The thing is that software (and other solutions, but I’m focusing on software) sometimes require other things to be done. You have to do a setup. Maybe you have to come up with a way to name some project demands. Perhaps there’s some extra data you have to enter to take advantage of all that super-fast software. Sometimes, to take advantage of the speed you have to do more work . You probably see where this is going, but I’m going there anyway. If you’re not careful, the extra work you do starts to add up. You have to check it and correct it. Choices start to interact, say you discover that your new form requires someone to sign off on it due to legal reasons. The time you save starts to get eaten up in other tasks to support being faster. You’re going faster but also going slower at the same time. Ever check all the checkboxes, done all the stuff to make things work faster and somehow all that speed feels slower? You’re not going crazy. Well, you may be, but it’s understandable. And all that’s extra normal work. What happens when a software update bricks your system? When a data import goes wrong? Your fast new system(s) cost time to fix as well, and know what, I’m not counting on that going well unless you’ve really run through the scenarios. Since disaster planning in software has become “figuring the SAAS system we have will always work,” I’m not exactly confident . Thus my conclusion – past a certain point with software (and indeed, processes) your attempts to get speed end up slowing you down . Hell, in some cases, so much other work comes in that you might not need software . You would have less work without the thing that goes faster . Again, you’re not losing your mind. Your mind just would like to get lost to get away from this. I guarantee right now that on your job all your cool automated stuff you still go to talk to a person to work around things. You might be the person. You know why you do it - it’s faster than using the fast software. Measuring return on investment is one thing, but measuring speed as a whole is important when you adopt new software. The value of software for speed is that everything is faster overall, you have to be careful to make sure the trade-offs are actually doing something. Otherwise the thing you sped up is faster and everything else is slowed down . Judging by my usual online gathering of friends – a huge crowd of IT nerds – it’s starting to feel a lot slower out there . Steven Savage www.StevenSavage.com www.InformoTron.com

Why deemed-export law breaks frontier model APIs We spent two years arguing about whether frontier models should have a kill switch. On June 12 we found out they already do, and the government flipped it. Here’s the short version. Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Three days later Commerce sent an order suspending all access to both models by any foreign national, anywhere on Earth, including Anthropic’s own foreign-national employees. Within hours, both models were throwing errors for everyone. Every other Claude, Opus 4.8 included, stayed online untouched. One reporter at The New Stack watched access die mid-article: model answering fine at 9:20pm, model error by 10:05. So what was the trigger? A jailbreak. And not a scary one. Point the model at a codebase, ask it to find flaws. That’s it. Anthropic reviewed the demo and watched it surface a handful of already-known, minor vulnerabilities, the kind GPT-5.5 and other public models hand you with no bypass at all. The capability the government wanted gone was basically automated code review on a Tuesday. That’s the part that should make you sit up. Because if the bug was ordinary, the response was anything but. Here’s how a narrow finding turned into a worldwide blackout. The order named foreign nationals as the restricted party. Every foreign national, everywhere. Now think about what a model API actually knows about whoever’s on the other end of a session. There’s an auth token, an IP address, a usage tier. There is no verified passport. IP geolocation tells you a rough location, which a VPN erases, and location was never citizenship anyway. The one fact the order hinges on is the one fact the API can’t see. So when the restriction covers a class of users you can’t identify and can’t isolate, the only way to guarantee you’re not serving a forbidden user is to serve nobody. That’s the move Anthropic made. Global off switch on both models. The takedown wasn’t surgical because the law underneath it doesn’t do surgical. The load-bearing rule here is something called a deemed export, codified at 15 CFR 734.13. Under the Export Administration Regulations, handing controlled tech or source code to a foreign national standing inside the US counts as an export to that person’s home country. No border crossing required. The act of letting the wrong person read the controlled thing is the export. That rule has a clean shape when the controlled thing is static. A blueprint, a source tarball, a spec sheet sitting in a folder. You classify it once, you gate who reads it, done. A frontier model breaks that shape completely. It doesn’t sit in a folder. It generates fresh output every prompt, and whether any given output is controlled depends on the substance of the answer plus the nationality and location of whoever asked. Two facts the model can’t reliably verify at the moment it’s generating. Legal analysts at Just Security flagged this exact collision months back. So now, the defense direction, because this is where it stops being trivia and starts being your problem. If you’re building on a hosted frontier model, the lesson is that model availability is no longer just an uptime risk. It can be revoked by a third party who isn’t your vendor, with effectively no warning. Anthropic says it got only verbal evidence of the jailbreak before the hammer dropped. What that means in practice: stop treating single-model dependency as cheaper-than-redundancy and start treating it as a concentration risk, the same way you’d treat single-cloud or single-region. Abstract your model provider behind an internal interface so swapping is a config change, not a rewrite. Keep a tested fallback to a second model family from a different provider, and actually run drills against it instead of assuming it works. Map which of your production workflows would survive losing one frontier model tomorrow and which would just stop. Capability parity won’t save you here, because the same capability sat in competing models that weren’t named in the order, and that didn’t keep the named ones online. The guardrails, by the way, were real. Anthropic’s stack even forced 30-day data retention specifically to catch jailbreaks in the act. Defense-in-depth, telemetry, the works. Didn’t matter to the outcome. Once the legal trigger exists, “narrow bug” and “global blackout” are the same event. This is the first time a government has forced a publicly deployed frontier model offline. The model isn’t the story. The precedent is. The off switch works, and the hand on it isn’t your vendor’s. What I kept off this post: the step-by-step compliance logic that left a global shutdown as the only legal state, the full deemed-export mechanism, and the politics in the background that nobody’s saying out loud. Sign the Petition Keep Android Open so, google is attempting to ban installing software outside of play store. this means that most of free, open-source, privacy respecting, ad-free software might become impossible to install. i know that not everyone installs open-source software from other repositories, but it would mean a LOT if you signed and verified your signature in the petition in the first link, share it to more people, and tell them to share it as well, whether you use android or some other OS. it literally just takes a minute, and change.org are very friendly to users and dont bore you to death with requests. if you are a developer, and havent heard about this crap yet, i really recommend reading about it in the second link or elsewhere, inform other developers, and send feedback to google, because your voice might have more effect on them than mine. thanks to everyone in advance :)
