Femtanyl just dropped her new album MAN BITES DOG and holy shit, it’s her most refined work yet. The complexity of her tracks just keeps going up and up, putting all these little extra sounds that add so much depth to her music that her earlier work just lacks a bit of. Not that her early work is bad, fuck Fem has done nothing but make bangers, but she just clearly put so much more into these tracks. It’s a very grunge/punk kind of noise album, and I’m in love with it, especially VIDEO NASTY and IS THIS IT. She’s clearly gaining so much confidence in her skills and work, not letting herself become stagnant in the praise she gets, genuinely one of if not the best DJs of her time, this album is so fuckin thumpin, just makes ya wanna move and cause a ruckus, my favourite project of hers by kilo at this point. It REALLY scratches that brain itch
Tsunami (11:11) Bambie Thug - 2022 I have heard that this lady sang at the Eurovision song contest representing Ireland, but being an avid avoider of such monstrosities, I still have not heard her track from that contest. This track here is pretty much my introduction to Bambie Thug. And it kicks off with what I like to call, the annoying sound of the neighbours playing their music too loud while I am in the bathtub and I can hear that muffled, but heavy as fuck bass, even as I lay underwater. The whole track is just pure, unfiltered Filth. From the musical composition to the lyrical content, Bambie Thug has made a complete assault on the senses to make high octane savagery her calling. The bass that never leaves you from start to finish is as murky and muddy as they come. Her lyrics, vehemently spat out in a cross between disgust at the world and brutal honesty with herself, leaving a solid mark on the listener. And the closing—oh man. A slow crescendo bubbles under the surface the entire track, then erupts into a pummeling bassline that ends as abruptly as it began. And we’re left there. Hanging in the aftermath of what can only be described as a full out auditory assault of the senses. This isn’t music, this is survival. I feel like I have been branded after listening to her. Just Bambie Thug scorched into my mind and body and soul and what I do with that violation now is up to me. She’s done her part. I was granted 3 minutes of insight into the noise inside her head made manifest and god am I thankful for those 3 minutes. Amazing track. A full on assault. And I love it.
Ancestors - II (Youth Attack, 2015) Hardcore kids that play melodic black metal is mostly a big palm to the face for my ears, but when hardcore bros take that black metal vibe to the dungeon and mingle it with punk I’m there. Ancestors are probably - depends when you ask - my favorite Youth Attack project. Practically the only connection to punk is its D-beat and mid-paced drums. Some punk riff here and there, but the scarcer the better. II by Ancestors
PLQ MRX - UPSIDEYERHEAD LP (Reptilian Records) If you’ve been following the Philadelphia underground for any length of time, you know it’s a place where you can expect the unexpected. Emerging from the hazy remnants of Plaque Marks, the collective now known as PLQ MRX has returned in 2026 with UPSIDEYERHEAD, an album that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on you. UPSIDEYERHEAD is an intentional blend of noise rock, noise punk, and… PLQ MRX - UPSIDEYERHEAD LP (Reptilian Records)
After years of being exposed to the biased internet version of punk, stripped of all controversy for mainstream appeal, I realized something…the politics or morals really don’t matter and it doesn’t decide if you’re a punk or not. Nor does the clothing style. It’s all about the music and it always has been. Yeah, most punk music carries political messaging, but that political messaging has varied vastly. Why? Because the internet didn’t exist when punk was still popular. There were no internet forums to decide what punk was, so you had to make your own scene. You gave your political messaging through music and every scene was different. Whether you were a sellout or a poser depended on what your scene thought of you, and what you thought about people not liking the kind of person you were. It’s why they’re called Nazi punks and not wannabe punk Nazis. It’s because they like punk music and they like going to punk shows. They’re not posers, they’re just hypocrites and objectively morally wrong. It’s like saying “you can’t be anarchist and a capitalist”. You definitely can be, the ideologies just don’t work together. Saying “x bad thing isn’t punk” is just cherry picking. Whether it’s bad or not doesn’t matter, punk has some right wing bands too. I mean Sex Pistols is pro-life (listen to bodies) and made to support capitalism. Punk isn’t inherently political or anything else than music oriented. Politics are just one of the things it’s most known for, because most punk music is politically charged. It’s too widespread for a single definition and trying to cherry pick what punk is just makes us conformists, which is exactly what punk is supposed to go against. It’s music. That’s what punk is.
