THE LESSON Just had the worst day fishing ever. Woke up at 3.52am with a shocking headache, runny nose & loose bowels. Managed to will myself into a reasonable state to roll out of the garage with boat in tow at 630am. 30 minutes from my preferred launch site it was clear I had to have an emergency meeting with Mr. Hanky. Diverted to the nearest town and conducted my business. As there was a boat ramp in town decided to fish upstream instead of downstream as originally planned. Water had turned from green to brown since my last visit two weeks prior. By lunchtime even though I had found fish I had nothing to show for my efforts. Headache was so bad it was making me nauseous, so I ate a sandwich and had a nap in the boat. Woke up and decided to start casting in some likely areas. Right on cue, the wind started howling and I proceeded to irretrievably snag then bust off three lures in quick succession. Fished my way back to the ramp for another few hours and ended up with a big fat donut. Never ever will I pack another banana for a snack in a boat.
Rethinking trout and Australian native fish
Rethinking trout and Australian native fish An ongoing topic of discussion in fishing circles, at least around the south-eastern Australian region, is the trout vs natives debate. It’s been raging for years — some might even say centuries — so we thought it about time to chip in and throw the proverbial two cents into the fray. Trout aficionados, with whom we often empathise via a controversial affection with these undoubtedly beautiful… View On WordPress
A few days fishing on the Murrumbidgee
A few days fishing on the Murrumbidgee Graz and I recently spent a few days fishing the Murrumbidgee west of Narrandera. It was a great chance to catch up with Grazza, who has spent the last year on the sunny shores and tropical mountains of Hawaii. We arrived fairly late after a decent 3.5 h0ur drive from Canberra. We only had a few km of dirt roads to get to the campsite but some rain earlier in the day had made the soil out there… View On WordPress

So, I did say that every cloud has a silver lining! When i switched off the IBC’s from the water return pipes, and began pulling all the pipes apart and draining water, i could here a flapping and commotion inside the pipe. Its not uncommon for us to find small trout or yabbies mucking about in the pipework but i did not expect to find a little Murray Cod! How this little guy was not eaten by the 500g trout we currently have defies me! In all, he’s in very good condition, a lot more brown in colour that the other two, who are more of a blue/silver/Grey. So, I had to decide what to do with him, he couldn’t go back int the trout tank, so i the only option was for him to take his chances with the other two in the big glass tank. Checking this morning, he seems to have settled in pretty well. In this tank, we have 6 silver perch left (mostly because the big Cod is dinning nightly on them, every morning he has a big fat belly!) I think that there will be four at a size that he can’t eat by the end of it, and as long as they grow they will be safe…..I hope. And of course, the Australian Bass that came with the Cod. The two little cod live one in the centre rocks, and the new one in the rocks on the left. …. there are no rocks on the right , simply because the Big One shove the whole tank around at night! But anyway, the little cod is our silver lining in this mess of a system right now!
Weekend read: Stephen Edgar, ‘Murray Dreaming’ It’s not the sharks Sliding mere inches from his upturned face Through warps of water where the tunnel arcs Transparent overhead, Their lipless jaws clamped shut, extruding teeth, Their eyes that stare at nothing, like the dead, Staring at him; it’s not the eerie grace Of rays he stood beneath, Gaping at their entranced slow-motion chase That is unending; It’s not the ultra-auditory hum Of ET… View On WordPress
How to fix a broken river
How to fix a broken river It seems that most of what I do these days is measure, model, or otherwise quantify environmental damage. While I dabble in restoration, occasionally I’m involved in a project that really can make a positive difference. If you’re an Australian, you’ll know a thing or two about just how much of a clusterfuck our biggest river system has turned into. From mismanagement, to outright theft, to… View On WordPress
