As an historian who specifically focused on ancient and NON WESTERN history, it both cracks me up and enrages me that the only knowledge of “history” TRA activists have and “assert” is the handful of cultures who had “transgender/third gender” people. Overwhelmingly non-Western/non-white cultures btw. Not to mention that they are applying modern concepts to ancient humans before a time we even had worldwide trade and exposure to different cultures at a significant scale. The Inca or Mesopotamians or whoever were not out here like “vagina means wear pink, penis means blue” or had truly rigid gender roles that are identical to those we are caged by today.
It is very clearly documented that what voters want does not translate into policy. Time and time again it reflects the interests of large donors. This is a common point by US Marxists, but is consistent globally - the only difference is that our lobbying over a certain amount is not legalised. We circumvent this legal process with under-the-table bribery (not to say this does not happen in the US too). But the point is, capitalism and democracy are, in fact, at odds with each other. The two cannot coexist, and we are all well aware of which one is prioritised by states. Liberal democracies are foolish and a pretty veneer over their economic bases. The only way we can get policy that voters, workers, the people, want, is change the economic base - and we cannot dismantle that economic base by playing by the rules of liberal democracy. (Basically, everyone should read Reform or Revolution)
Eventually you come to realise that capitalism is contrary to basic human empathy. I recall being quite young when I first realised that if you do not work, you essentially die. This has fairly obvious implications for people who are unable to work, but if you simplify it even further, your ability to survive should not be contingent on your ability to work. People deserve to have more than that. What is life if you’re living to work for your next meal, sleeping, and doing it all over again? We are a resilient species and find joy in these bleak scenarios, but education, travelling, new foods, and so much mo is out of reach. Higher needs are not met. Is that just supposed to be the way things are? That’s incredibly stupid . You can call me idealistic for that, but the current economic system is so fundamentally anti-human that stripping it down to its core reveals it.
the fundamental issue plaguing a lot of Marxists is that their ideology is fundamentally dualist &/or (and more often) essential and it leads them to say stupid shit like “trans men oppress women because men oppress women” or “wanting community is petty-bourgeois artisan reactionism” or “Lenin was a panpsychist”
I hear a lot of people talking about how Elon “doesn’t have a trillion dollars, it’s not liquid!” And they act like you’re the one who doesn’t understand the economy. I suggest that anyone in that camp looks into the Buy, Borrow, Die strategy. Sure, he doesn’t “have” the trillion. He does have assets he can use as collateral to take out giant loans, millions at a time, with interest rates between 2 or 3%. The bank keeps them low both because they make enough from it, and because they want the rich to keep doing business with them. So you’re right, he doesn’t have that trillion. He has access to so much more, and he doesn’t even have to spend it, he only pays the interest rates.
now that I’ve started actually interacting with other communists both online and irl I’ve noticed that with communists is the only time I feel treated as an equal in a conversation and that’s actually the coolest thing ever, everyone thinks I’m a person and also don’t assume I don’t know anything
Inevitably, when critiquing anarchism based on the writings of the most popular currents, the retort is “well, you only looked at some big writers but I know lots of anarchists who would disagree with them”. The implication of this is that there is some anarchist essence that the Marxist has failed to understand. The problem is that there is no essence to speak of, no common thread that meaningfully unites all “anarchists”, even if we exclude ancap and adjacent ideologies.
