‘25 (Re)Read #13: The Scary Godmother Omnibus by Jill Thompson Scary Godmother my love they could never make me hate you. I’ve been struggling with reading lately so I took the easy way out: comic books /hj I loved the Scary Godmother books as a kid and I still watch the movies every Halloween. This year’s Halloween viewing inspired me to borrow the e-book for the complete series, and it was super fun to revisit. I have the movies just about memorized, so I loved seeing all the references that they drew from in comic form. But I’d say the comics would be good stand-alone reads as well, even for (especially for?) an adult audience. BTW, moments that made me think “are we sure these are kids’ books?”: Max and Ruby always DTF (your kid is literally in the room please soundproof your coffin you horndogs); Harry’s entire character is so recognizable as a chronically online incel neckbeard type, I’m surprised to see that was already an archetype in the 90’s; there is so much drinking and drug use, these monsters know how to party; the broommates’ adult struggles (family expectations, work-life balance, high school reunions, etc.) and them trying to explain them to Hannah without talking down to her are painfully relatable; and above all, Orson’s storyline in “Ghoul’s Out for Summer” which absolutely traumatized me as a kid and is still TERRIFYING.
Jill Thompson modelled Étaín of the Second Look …and also voiced her in the Audible I already wrote a bit about the background of Étaín of the Second Look yesterday. A bit more about the art behind it today, because Jill Thompson actually modelled Étaín on herself, and she also got to voice her in the Audible. Turns out that’s not all though. From “The Sandman Companion”: “A good example of that, by the way, is her handling of Etain of the Second Look-who is Jill Thompson, visually. If you turn to chapter 3, pages 13 through 16, that’s pretty much what Jill looks like, and how she moves. […] Jill asked if she could draw the things in her own house. I said sure, and added that she might as well draw herself as the lady while she was at it. […] Jill also put a lot of herself into Delirium, in terms of body language, facial expressions, and so on. Jill was a terrific match for Brief Lives, and I think she did some of her very best work on it.” And also: “Jill Thompson’s artwork is consistently intelligent, inventive, witty, and, above all, human. Her graceful juggling of fantasy and reality in Brief Lives brought characters such as Delirium, Destruction, Bamabas, Mervyn, and Ishtar to vibrant life and created an entirely credible and unforgettable visual journey.” Hi, Jill Thompson’s brother… “[…] she drew herself as the fairy-woman Etain [and] adds that other characters were also based on real life: “For example, my brother appears as the bouncer at the dance place, Suffragette City. And the visual model for Barnabas was a sweet Australian herding dog who used to live in my neighborhood and was treated badly by his owners. One day they moved away and I feared his fate would not be a happy one, so I decided to immortalize that poor puppy dog by drawing him into Brief Lives. Many of the scenes I love best involve Barnabas especially when he’s critiquing Destruction’s efforts at art.” The character Thompson feels closest to, however, is Delirium, who she says is “sprighty and fey; and kind of childlike, but not a child.”
