20 Years of Cars

Disney Pixar’s Cars is a franchise that I have loved for many years. It’s crazy to think the movie first released in theaters 20 years ago and it is still the biggest Pixar franchise today. Since we’re celebrating the film’s 20th, I decided to share my story of how I got into Cars. It all started in June 2006… Me and my dad went to McDonald’s one summer afternoon to get some lunch and noticing that the toys were based around the latest film, Disney Pixar’s Cars. I wasn’t into Cars as a kid, the only cars I did like were Hot Wheels (BEAT THAT!). So, I got my happy meal, ate my food, then opened my toys. I ended up getting Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater. I can still remember playing with them on the old Mickey D’s playground, it was super fun playing with them. Speaking of McQueen and Mater, I remember my old teacher in elementary school had these two MEGA blocks sets based on Cars, one featuring McQueen and the winners stage and the other with Mater and a gas station. I played with these for hours, I even remember getting a die cast of Dirt Track Lightning McQueen that day too. But besides getting happy meal toys, playing with MEGA blocks versions of McQueen and Mater and owning a die cast of McQueen, I could tell Cars was slowly becoming a new hyperfixation for me, but I still wasn’t into the franchise. In July 2006, we took a trip over to my grandparents house to celebrate my 6th birthday, I had a Cars themed birthday. I can still remember those Mater paper plates with the tow truck smiling at you. Man, I miss the late mid 2000s. But aside from that, I got a lot of great presents, a little golden book, a Cine-Magic book, McQueen and Mater mini flashlights, video games for both my V.Smile and Leapter. It was a great birthday for 6 year old me and I’ll never forget it. When Cars released on DVD in November 2006, me and my family watched it together, including the short film, Mater and the Ghostlight. I didn’t really watch Cars a lot as a kid and it was a franchise I wasn’t into as a 6 year old, but that all changed in 2010… I was getting into new obsessions, Pokemon, Phineas and Ferb, but most importantly, Disney Pixar’s Cars. Sadly, I no longer had my original copy because it was sold at a yard sale, but I got a new copy and I watched it, loving every second. I also got Cars Toons: Mater’s Tall Tales on DVD too, I watched these a bunch on Disney channel whenever they came on. In fact, if it wasn’t for Mater’s Tall Tales, I wouldn’t have been introduced to one of my greatest hyperfixations and that was Cars 2. I still remember watching the teaser trailer a lot growing up. I had never been this excited for a movie. I watched tons of videos on the new toys that were coming out, I watched remakes of various scenes from the movie, and don’t get me started of all the times I recited this movie by heart and recreated it with my cars. I loved Cars 2 so much, it made me a huge fan of Mater and it got my interest in traveling around the world one day. The toy line had an interesting run too, (Running from 2011 to 2016). Cars 2 made me a huge fan of the franchise and I was excited to see what was in store for it. Then came November 21st, 2016… I was a sophomore, still a huge fangirl of Cars and my newest hyperfixation, Wander Over Yonder, the show had wrapped it’s second season and that was it. But I keep it close to my heat because I love it so much. I was looking up CodyTheMaverick’s blog, trying to find new WOY posts to look at and that’s when I saw the teaser trailer for Cars 3. I was excited that my favorite franchise was getting a third movie. I remember clicking play on the video, getting ready to see what latest adventures these characters were going to go on. But instead, I got something completely different… The teaser showed intense NASCAR style racing with Lightning McQueen in the lead, various shots of the race cars racing, a shot of a new next gen race car racing alongside the other race cars, then it quickly cut to a shot of McQueen skidding before the screen smashed cut to black as a crash sound was herd. Immediately, it faded up on the track again, revealing a broken, destroyed and defeated Lightning McQueen, smoke and spark flew in every direction, just went it look like he was about to hit the pavement, the screen snapped to black showing the tagline: “ From this moment, everything will change.” The iconic hood ornament appeared, revealing the film would be releasing in summer 2017. I had no words, I was shocked and flabbergasted. I never thought I would see McQueen had an intense wreak like that. This movie was taking an extreme approach than the previous films. A bunch of questions came into my head, I had no idea how to answer them. All I could do was wait until the new year, then I could see what was going to happen. Everything leading up to Cars 3′s release was enough to get me excited for the film, I remember watching the trailers, getting the toys, seeing everything related to it, it was definitely going to be a film to remember. In fact, this was one I’ll never forget seeing on the big screen. July 2th, 2017, the day before my birthday, we went to go see Cars 3 in the theater and I can’t tell you that this was the GREATEST experience I’ve ever been too. As a 16 year old girl, seeing my favorite characters on the big screen was incredible, the story was amazing, the music was peek cinema and everything was just fantastic. This was one of my favorite memories and I will never forget it. Throughout the years, I’ve stuck with Cars since my obsession with Cars 2. I love this franchise and will love whatever they decide to do next, especially with the new series, “Cars: Lightning Racers” coming out next year. I’m proud to be a Cars fan and celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary. Thank you for all the wonderful memories, Cars. Happy 20 years!
