If you have ever felt the weight of a Monday morning, this painting probably speaks directly to your soul. This is Blue Monday, and it is easily one of the most recognizable pieces of art in Black history. What makes this piece so special is the story behind the brush. The artist, Annie Lee, lived the very life she painted. She spent years working a regular 9-to-5 as a clerk for a railroad company in Chicago. She was a mother and a widow who knew exactly what it felt like to sit on the edge of the bed, head down, trying to gather the strength to do it all over again. Annie did not even start her career as a gallery artist until she was in her 40s. She chose to paint her characters without facial features because she wanted the body language to tell the story. She wanted us to see ourselves in the slumped shoulders and the tired posture. Her journey is a powerful reminder that our current chapter is not our final one. She went from working a desk job she found exhausting to becoming an international art icon whose work ended up on the sets of shows like Coming to America and 227. Annie Lee proved that your gift does not have an expiration date and that your struggle can eventually become your greatest masterpiece.
